Learn English with EnglishClass101.com! “English class has never been like this,” says the voice on the phone. You recognize the voice of your friend, Ralph. Sure that your friend has forgotten to include you in some deep, dark secret, you reply in English, “Well, Ralph, that’s a great opening for a phone call, but what are you talking about? What has happened in English class?” The tone in his voice says something you can’t quite grasp. He’s not being coy, but you can’t tell if he’s worried or excited. Slowly, he prepares you in his careful English, “Two things happened this week - one inside and one outside of English class - that will set our class on its ear. I have just heard myself and just could not wait to tell you this one. And I have always considered myself a good friend to you. So I have to give you some sort of notice. Be prepared to stare and be stared at.” With your curiosity piqued, you ask in English, “So what has happened?” He replies, “Well, first, the eight girls you have been dating all talked to one another. Eight may be a lucky number in your culture, but not in English class. They didn’t look happy when they found out you have been going out with all of them. They were all together with a number of their other friends at the mall, one of them saw a sign for a show, and that sent the conversation into a tailspin.” A little worried…and a little humored, you reply in English, “That’s not good news. Is there any good news?” Being the true friend he is, your best pal replies in an almost cautious tone, “Yea, there is one bit of good news. A new girl has just started in English class, and she’s really cute. But don’t get your hopes up; she has told everyone that she wants to go out with me.”
