Teddy: So how does it feel to be back?
Drew: I see some changes here and there, but overall it's the same. Feels like I'm in college again every time I come back. I bet the coffee tastes the same too. They knew me here; all I had to say was "the usual."
Sales Rep: What can I get you?
Teddy: I'll have a triple venti decaf nonfat latte with a shot of sugar-free vanilla and just a tiny bit of whipped cream in my cup… Drew, this one's on me.
Drew:…uhh…
Teddy: Drew? Don't tell me you've forgotten how to order coffee!
Drew: Don't be ridiculous…I…I'll have what he's having, thanks.
Sales Rep: Okay, your total is $9.35.
Teddy: Here's a ten.
Sales Rep: Okay, $0.65 is your change. Sir, your drinks will be ready over there.
Teddy: You've forgotten, haven't you?
Drew: No, your usual just happened to be my usual.

Drew: Hey, thanks, Teddy. Sounds like fun! When is it?
Teddy: This Saturday. I can come and pick you up at your hotel and also be the designated driver.
Drew: Sounds good.
Teddy: Oh, and Janine was also invited.
Drew: Wh…why the heck would you do that?

Drew: And she doesn't understand the phrase "No, I'm not interested. Stop asking me."

Accounts Manager: Hello, sir. What can I help you with today?
Drew: Hello, I'd like to open a checking account. I have one thousand dollars with me today to put in.
Account Manager: Certainly. Do you have some ID with you today?
Drew: Yes, here's my passport.
Account Manager: Perfect. Please fill out this application form. Would you like to open a savings account with that?
Drew: Umm. No, thank you.
Accounts Manager: Are you sure? You can open one by depositing three hundred dollars today, and every month it'll transfer twenty-five dollars from your checking to your savings and collect a 3.2 percent APY.
Drew: Sounds like a good thing, but I'm only going to be here for a short while, so no, thank you.
Account Manager: Okay, sir, also, for just eight dollars a month you can get overdraft protection for up to five hundred dollars and one hundred personalized checks.
Drew: No, I don't need any of those. I pay with my credit card for large things and I'm very careful with my money. But I would like to have online banking. Is that free of charge?
Account Manager: Yes, it is, just fill out this form as well.
Drew: Okay. (filling out form)
Account Manager: Your card will be sent to you at the address you wrote down, and then you'll have to come back to choose your PIN.
Drew: Are the ATMs 24/7?
Account Manager: Yes, they are.
Drew: Okay, sounds great! Thanks for your help!

Mike: Excuse me, Mr. Dunkin. Could I speak to you sometime today about me taking some time off work?
Boss: Sure. I have a few minutes now. Come in. Have a seat.
Mike: Thank you.
(Mike steps into Mr. Dunkin's office and sits down.)
Boss: Help yourself to a doughnut.
Mike: No, thank you, Mr. Dunkin. I just had one this morning.
Boss: Okay. So, when were you thinking of taking time off?
Mike: Well, I was hoping I could take a week off starting the July Fourth weekend. I should be done with the Krispy Kreme account by then.
Boss: True. But we're expecting another huge contract in July. We really need you here. You're our best designer. Can you push back your vacation until August? You can take as many days as you want.
Mike: I guess. Could I take the first two weeks of August off then?
Boss: You sure can! It's settled then. Just hand in a vacation request form to HR by the end of the week. Make sure you have enough paid vacation days left.
Mike: I will. Thank you, Mr. Dunkin.

Teddy: And look who's here! Drew! How've you been? Good to see you again!
Drew: Hey, Teddy! I'm good. Just arrived yesterday so a little jet lagged.
Teddy: Oh yeah, I know how that feels. How long did you say you were staying with us this time?
Drew: Looks like you're stuck with me for half a year.
Teddy: Really! Hey, you're with us for quite a while!
Sandra: Hey, Drew! Good to see you again! Heard you were coming to work with us; I didn't know it was so soon though!
Drew: Hey, Sandra, good to see you too! Hey, you look great! Did you lose weight?
Sandra: Well yeah, a whole baby's worth! The last time you saw me I was pregnant, remember?
Drew: Oh, right! How's your baby?
Sandra: Baby's great! Starting to walk and causing trouble already.
Teddy: I'm the one who has lost weight, Drew. I'm on this new protein milkshake diet. Didn't you notice?
Drew: No, not at all.

Drew: Okay, sure, why not?
Sales Rep: With a dollar extra you can upgrade the size on that as well.

Sales Rep: Hello, thanks for calling Rent-Some-Wheels. Can I help you?
Drew: Yeah, I'd like to rent a car for the next seven days.
Sales Rep: What kind of car do you have in mind?
Drew: Well, I prefer a Lamborghini Diablo, but I'll take what you have, something to get to work and back.
Sales Rep: I hear you, sir. Well, we have some two-door coupes left and a few mid-sized sedans then.
Drew: The smaller one is fine. How much is that with insurance?
Sales Rep: Well, the car is $65 a day, and with taxes and additional fees that comes to $99.96. You can get a loss and damage waiver for $8.95 a day and a personal loss waiver for $6.95 a day.
Drew: …So how much is that in total?
Sales Rep: Well…let me see…$115.86. We also have the liability insurance for an additional $15.75, and if you want a ski rack then it's a single payment of $12.50.
Drew: I tell you what, do you have a website? Because your endless numbering off is making me dizzy.
Sales Rep:…Umm…yes we do, Rent-Some-Wheels.com…
Drew: Okay. I'll just reserve it online and pick it up later.
Sales Rep: All right then. Well, thanks for calling anyways.
Drew: Bye. (hangs up) I should've done that to begin with.

Receptionist: Welcome to the Golden Gate Hotel. Do you have a reservation, sir?
Drew: Yes, I do.
Receptionist: May I have your name, sir?
Drew: Drew English.
Receptionist: …Okay, sir, looks like you have a double room for seven nights. You'll be staying in room 706 on the seventh floor. The gym and pool are on the tenth floor, and breakfast starts at five-thirty in the morning and closes at ten. Here's your room key.
Drew: Is there a minibar in the room?
Receptionist: Yes, there is, sir, but if you do take anything from there, it looks like expenses from that will not be covered by Innovative International.
Drew: I knew I was hoping in vain…oh well, at least there is one.
Receptionist: Anything else, sir?
Drew: Yeah, can I get the number to a car rental service around here?
Receptionist: You can find that information in a pamphlet in your room.
Drew: All right. Thanks.

Drew: Taxi! (opens door, gets in, closes door)
Taxi driver: Where to?
Drew: Can you take me to the Golden Gate Hotel? I have the address right here.
Taxi driver: Don't worry, I know where it is.
Drew: Oh, good.
Taxi driver: You hear what happened to the Andy Warhol painting at the MOMA? It was stolen!
Drew: Oh really? Wow! That's just crazy! Security must have been sleeping, or the thief must have been nimble as anything! Like in the movies!
Taxi driver: Yeah, probably some art lover who's athletic enough to pull such a stunt.
Drew: Yeah, or maybe the person just didn't think that it was modern enough to be at the Museum of Modern Art…
Taxi driver: We're here. That'll be $44.90.
Drew: Oh, here's fifty dollars. Keep the change. Thanks.
Taxi driver: All right. Have a nice day.

Illness

Watching someone you love deteriorate before your eyes is a tough business.

This morning, my mother-in-law called to say that she and my father-in-law were on their way to Louisiana to see her closest cousin, Jimmy.

Jimmy is in the end stages of lung cancer, and he will be sent home with hospice care in the next few days.

Now, my in-laws have known about Jimmy's state for about a month. However, they waited until the call came that the end was near to drive down to see him. I know that all too often, people wait until it is too late, and then they drive to the funeral.

"I know that Jimmy will not be Jimmy when I get there," my mother-in-law said. "I just am not sure that I want to see him that way."

She is I know thinking of her mother who died of cancer back in 1997.
She is afraid that she will forget the Jimmy who sat up all night drinking and telling stories in my backyard the night of her son's wedding. That she will forget the Jimmy who danced with his granddaughter every year at Jazz Fest. Who sucked the brains of crawfish in the blistering heat at the family's annual crawfish boil.

I can't help but wonder whether her logic is correct. After all, it won't be long before I am faced with this same prospect. My brother's muscular dystrophy is worsening exponentially every year, and I know that no matter how hard he fights it, the disease will eventually change him from the person I've always known.

Of course, I will see my brother as often as he lets me. Chances are, I will make a nuisance of myself. No matter. I will try my best to preserve my memories while spending as much time as I can with my little brother. As his big sister, I believe that that is my job, nuisance or not.
