Top US 10 Cities and Regions - San Francisco and Northern California
The city of San Francisco is located in northern California. This city is located on the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula and encompasses 231 square miles, of which 185 square miles are water.
In addition to San Francisco, the northern California area includes the major cities of San Jose, Oakland, and Sacramento. The geography of this area is diverse, consisting of sandy beaches along the Pacific Coast on the west and Sierra Nevada Mountains on the east. This area includes Central Valley, which is a rich agricultural area where numerous farms and vineyards are located.
Though most of California is known for mild winters and dry summers, San Francisco's climate differs due to the fact that is surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean, which greatly influences the temperature. This city is known for cool winds and fog.
According to the 2010 census, the population of San Francisco was 805,235, making it the second-most densely populated major U.S. city.
San Francisco was founded by the Spanish in 1776 and became part of Mexico in 1821. This area became part of the United States in 1846 as a result of the Mexican-American War. When the California Gold Rush started in 1848, this city grew rapidly. In 1906, three-quarters of the city was destroyed by an earthquake and resulting fire.
Tourism is also a major source of income for the area, with tourists coming to see the area's distinct cultural features, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, cable cars, architecture, and geography. This city is famous for its hills, of which there are fifty within the city limits.
This city has several public and private colleges and universities located within the city limits, including the City College of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, and the University of California-San Francisco. It is also known for its entertainment and performing arts venues as well as its museums and historical sites.

Top 10 US Holidays—Independence Day

The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States, is typically celebrated by fireworks displays all over the country. Some of the most-watched fireworks displays include those at the National Mall and at Mount Rushmore. Many towns and locales have their own fireworks displays on the evening of the fourth, and Americans typically have backyard barbecues and celebrations in honor of their country's independence. Americans also enjoy setting off fireworks themselves, although this is banned or restricted in many parts of the country. In some areas there are so many fireworks being set off by private residents that police can do little, if anything, to enforce the law, which was put in place for safety reasons.

Independence Day dates back to 1776, which was the day the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence for the United States. However, it wasn't until 1781 when the states started to pick it up as a state holiday. Massachusetts was the first state to do so. The very first celebration of Independence Day was held in Maine in 1820, and Congress made the Fourth of July an official federal holiday in 1870. However, federal employees did not receive pay for the day off until 1838.

The week or especially the weekend around the Fourth of July is typically a very busy travel day in the United States because many Americans travel to see friends and family, making a long weekend out of the holiday.Boating and camping are two activities often enjoyed for Independence Day.

Top 10 US Holidays—Halloween

Halloween is typically celebrated in the United States by children dressing up in various costumes and going from house to house collecting candy. A door knock is answered with a cheerful "Trick or treat!" The holiday falls on October 31 every year, and children aren't the only ones celebrating. Adults also enjoy going to costume parties.

The history of the name dates back to the Scottish, and it translates to "All Hallows Eve." The holiday is a mix of Celtic practices and also Roman Catholic rituals. In many cultures, Halloween is the day when the dead are allowed to return to earth, although in the United States this is mostly expressed only through the spookiness of the holiday. Halloween is a time to be scared and to frighten others, usually through ghoulish pranks.

The way Americans celebrate Halloween can be traced all the way back to its roots in Celtic and Roman times. Bonfires were a hallmark of the celebration, just as they are today. In the United States, it is common for children and their parents to carve faces into pumpkins, which are known as jack-o-lanterns. This custom dates back to the Irish and Scottish practice of carving turnips, which was meant to be done in remembrance of those who were in purgatory.

Dressing up in costumes and going door to door also dates to the Middle Ages, during which the poor would go around to the doors of various residents on this holiday to ask for food. In return, they would pray for the dead.

Holiday Shopping

I took my daughter to a hardware store this morning to buy new fan blades for our outdated ceiling fan. After buckling her into the red plastic shopping cart, we had barely walked through the sliding doors when she shouted, \"I wanna see Christmas decorations and Mickey, Mommy!\" She pointed to her left using her entire body.

I looked, and much to my disdain, the aisles were filled with blow up Christmas yard art depicting Mickey Mouse and friends, toy soldiers, snow globes with Frosty the Snowman inside, and others too numerous to name. The center aisle displays were filled with wrapping paper, plastic boxes designed especially for storing ornaments, and the ornaments themselves. Everything was red, green, and gold, and the air smelled of cloves and pine.

Today is Halloween.

When I was a kid, Christmas decorations showed up in the stores after Thanksgiving. Halloween candy did not go on sale until after October 31st, and the Pilgrims in their shiny belt buckles and stove pipe hats were allowed to stick around until the last turkey leg was eaten.

Now, it seems that we are all in a rush to get to the next holiday, whatever that may be. I know that Valentine candy will be on the shelves the day after Christmas, and Santa and his reindeer will be relegated to the sale aisle at the back of the store. Perhaps it\'s just me, but seeing artificial Christmas trees on Halloween morning takes something special away from passing out candy to trick-or-treaters at night.

\"Look, Mommy,\" my daughter says as she watches another little girl playing with an animatronic elf. It shakes a candy cane studded with silver bells and sings \"Jingle Bells\" in a tiny voice.

\"Mmmhmm,\" I say, and turn the cart toward the lighting department.

Taxi driver: Yeah, probably some art lover who\'s athletic enough to pull such a stunt.

----Formal English----

Drew: Now for the fun part…what to declare and what not to declare…
Officer: Do you have anything in your luggage that you need to declare, sir?
Drew: No, nothing at all.
Officer: Can you please step to the side, sir, so I can check your bag?
Drew: Sure. (opens bag, officer digs around)
Officer: You have an apple in here.
Drew: Ohhhh yeah! I bought that just before I left the airport in Singapore… I completely forgot to eat it. That\'s all!
Officer: Sir, I\'m going to confiscate it for health reasons.
Drew: Ohhh…my apple…
Officer: You also have a banana in here, sir!
Drew: Ohhh yeah! That too! Oops…haha (weak laugh)…
Officer: What else do you have in here?
Drew: Well…I might have other things now that they\'re turning up…

Drew: Oh jeez, here we go again. Another happy-looking immigration officer interrogation!
Officer: Passport, please.
Drew: Hi, here\'s my passport.
Officer: Where are you flying from today sir?
Drew: I flew in from Singapore.
Officer: What\'s the purpose of your stay?
Drew: Well, I\'m here to work.
Officer: Who\'s your employer?
Drew: Innovative International.
Officer: And how long do you plan to stay here?
Drew: Six months; that\'s half a year.
Officer: I know that. Where are you staying?
Drew: I\'m going to camp out in a tent under a bridge. Don\'t worry, I\'ll have my lighter and my iPhone. I\'ll be fine.
Officer: Sir, if I were you, I would drop the humor. Where are you staying (forcefully)?
Drew: My employer has rented out an apartment for me in the city. Small but comfortable.
Officer: Fine. Okay, here you are.
Drew: Thanks! (walking away) That wasn\'t as bad as I thought it would be!
