Chihiro: Chihiro here.
Daniel: Daniel here. Taking It to the Next Level
Chihiro: Hey everyone, I’m Chihiro and welcome back to EnglishClass101.com
Daniel: With us, you’ll learn to speak English with fun and effective lessons.
Chihiro: We also provide you with cultural insights...
Daniel: And tips you won’t find in a textbook. In this lesson, you will learn about the buzzword phrase “the next level”
Chihiro: From business to relationships, to games, to exercise and beyond, someone’s always looking forward to getting to the next level.
Daniel: That’s right. The next level. What that implies is the next stage of growth. It suggests advancement and progress.
Chihiro: Right, movement and moving on. The next level is something to strive for, something that you hope to achieve, and therefore work for it. In business, companies are constantly working to move to the next level by perhaps improving their products or offering services that are more advanced than what they currently offer.
Daniel: A good business example is the company Apple. They took digital music to the next level with their iPod, it’s a device that had never been seen before.
Chihiro: Exactly. So, they took things to the next level. They also took the mobile phone game to the next level by introducing the iPhone which was, and I think it still is considered kind of revolutionary for a cell phone.
Daniel: Right, something very, very different and it’s changing the cell phone industry. Also with Google, they took search engines to the next level with their new formula that allowed the search engine to provide better results than ever before.
Chihiro: But technology isn’t the only area of our lives where things can be taken to the next level, right?
Daniel: Right. The phrase “to the next level” is often used for relationships. Have you ever dated someone for a while only to find out that your significant other wasn’t interested in taking your relationship to the next level? What does that mean? “Take your relationship to the next level”?
Chihiro: Well, before we explain, there is also the opposite. Have you ever found out that a boyfriend or a girlfriend really wanted to take things to the next level while you wanted to keep things casual?
Daniel: Well, there’s a bit of a hint, “keep things casual”. It’s the opposite. So, if you’re dating casually, the next level might be dating exclusively, only dating one person.
Chihiro: Right. And if you’re dating exclusively already, the next level might be getting engaged to get married.
Daniel: Aside from relationships, we can also apply it to sports, right?
Chihiro: Definitely. Top athletes always work towards taking their skills to the next level and maybe amateur athletes who want to become more serious about their sport, whether it’s running, swimming, cycling or whatever, often focus on getting better, or taking their skills to the next level.
Daniel: Well, for me, I’m working on teaching English, taking that to the next level. I want to become a better English teacher.
Chihiro: You’re so noble.
Daniel: Well, listeners, is there anything in your life that you’re looking to take to the next level?
Chihiro: And if there is, how do you plan to get there?
Daniel: Please leave us comments on the website.
