While most people wouldn't or couldn't step outside without their cell phones, when visiting another country, sometimes it's a little too far for your local carrier. In recent years, you can use your cell phone when you get to the States, but you have to pay very expensive cover charges. So if you feel like saving your pennies, the good old ways work like a charm.
Before asking for a card, you may want to find out if they have the cards. In English you would say, Do you have calling cards? Do you have calling cards?Let's break it down by sllyable.Do you have starts the question of asking the clerk, calling cards is the item you want. Now let's hear it one more time. Do you have calling cards? You might be tempted to call them telephone cards, but they're more commonly known as calling cards in the States.
The answer to this will be yes, we do or no, we don't. In the case that they have the cards, you'll want to ask for a denomination that we will talk about.
Let's start with a five dollar card.
You would say, Can I get a $5 calling card please? Can I get starts the question, and a $5 dollar is the value of the card, and calling card is the item you want, and finally of course, please. So once again, that's Can I get a $5 calling card please? You can also of course replace, can I get with may I have to sound very polite. So that's May I have a $5 calling card please?
For a ten dollar card, you just have to change the value in this way Can I get a $10 calling card please? If you don't need a calling card and just want to make a phone call, you might use a payphone.
If you are looking for a payphone, you will say, Is there a payphone near here? Is there starts the question, a payphone is what you're looking for, and near here is the location of the phone...or at least the location you're hoping it is at. So that's Is there a payphone near here?
Okay, now to close out today's lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll say the phrase or sentence, and why don't you try saying it out loud? Good luck everybody!
- Do you have calling cards?
- Can I get a $5 calling card please?
- May I have a $5 calling card please?
- Is there a payphone near here?
All right, that's going to do it for today! See you all soon!
