| Buying Phone Cards in the United Kingdom |
| These days it’s hard to imagine life without a mobile phone. But while travelling, it may be too expensive to use your phone from home because of the high roaming charges. So in this lesson, we’ll look at ways to save money by using some traditional forms of communication! |
| SURVIVAL PHRASES |
| A very convenient way to make international calls from the UK is to buy a phone card. To ask if a shop has any cards, you could say: “Do you have any international phone cards?” We start this sentence with the question form ‘do you have any’, followed by the item you want, ‘international phone cards’. “Do you have any international phone cards?” |
| The answer to this request will either be ‘yes, we do’, or, ‘no, we don’t’. If the shop does have the cards, then you’ll have to choose how much you want to spend. |
| Phone cards usually come in denominations of £5, £10, or £20. For this example, we’ll ask for a £5 card. In this situation, you would say: “Could I have a £5 phone card, please?” So, we start with the polite request, ‘could I have’, followed by the item you want, ‘a £5 phone card’, and finally ‘please’. “Could I have a £5 phone card, please?” |
| You can change this request by replacing £5 with £10 or £20. |
| If you just want to make a quick phone call, then you could use a payphone. However, it can be quite hard to find payphones in the UK these days, because most people have mobile phones. So you will probably need to ask somebody: “Is there a payphone near here?” |
