| Buying a SIM Card |
| If you still want to use a mobile phone while travelling in the UK, but don’t want to pay expensive roaming charges, you can get a UK pay-as-you-go SIM card to make phone calls and texts. If the handset from your country is not unlocked, it is recommended you buy a UK handset. This is actually the most recommended option, especially as the basic ones are so cheap anyway. With pay-as-you-go, this also means you are not bound to a contract or monthly fee. You can top up your phone credit either with a top-up-card or directly from your handset. SIM cards can be obtained in any mobile phone store or supermarket. Unless you have an unlocked handset from your country, buying a basic mobile phone handset in the UK is a good choice for travellers, so in this lesson, we’ll take a look at the phrases needed to get a great deal on a phone that will help you stay in touch with friends and family! |

| To get your hands on a mobile phone, you would say: “I would like to buy a handset.” We start with the polite request ‘I would like’, followed by the action, ‘to buy, and finally the item you want, ‘a handset’, which is the term for a mobile phone device. “I would like to buy a handset.” |
| If you are travelling with your friends or family, then you might want to buy one or several phones. In this case, you would add the number of phones you want, and change the noun to ‘phones’, to make it plural. |
| ‘I would like to buy two phones’ or ‘I would like to buy three phones’. |
| When it comes to buying a phone, there are many points to consider – mainly the price! It’s important to find out how much it will cost to make and receive calls. For this example, let’s pretend that you’re from Greece. Two vital questions you’ll need to ask when getting the Sim card are: “How much are calls to Greece?” and “Are incoming calls free?” |
| For the first question, we start by asking for the price, ‘how much’, and then ‘are calls to Greece’, which is the location. Simply replace ‘Greece’ with your home country in this situation. |

| The second question starts with the verb ‘are’, followed by the information you want, ‘incoming calls’, and finally the word ‘free’, which means no cost. |
