In this video, you'll learn 20 of the most common words and phrases in English.
Hi everybody, my name is Alisha.
Welcome to The 800 Core English Words and Phrases video series!
This series will teach you the eight hundred most common words and phrases in English.
Ok! Let's get started! First is…
1. "break"
So to break something means to cause it not to function or, for example, when you break an object, it means you crush it or you destroy it in some way, so you can't use it anymore.
"I broke one of my plates while washing the dishes."
2. "cut"
Cut can be used as a noun and as a verb. We can use it to mean to separate two parts of something, with a knife, usually, and we can use it to talk about an injury that we receive from something sharp.
"The boy fell and has a deep cut on his leg."
3. "sprain"
Sprain is used as a noun and as a verb.
As a noun, a sprain refers to a type of muscle injury, if you stretch or tear a small part of the muscle, you get a sprain. As a verb, to sprain refers to causing this type of injury.
"The athlete sprained his ankle."
4. "microwave oven"
A microwave oven is also called a microwave. It's a box that we use to heat up food quickly.
"The most convenient kitchen appliance is the microwave oven."
5. "refrigerator"
A refrigerator is like a very large cold box that we use to store foods and drinks. Refrigerator is a very very long word so we usually say fridge.
"The refrigerator is full of food for the holiday."
6. "vacuum cleaner"
A vacuum cleaner is a machine we use to clean our floors.
We usually use vacuum cleaners to clean carpets. So a vacuum cleaner is typically very very noisy and we push it to clean our house.
"This vacuum cleaner is very quiet."
7. "sweat"
Sweat is both a noun and a verb. Sweat as a noun is the liquid that comes out of your body when you feel very hot, like when you exercise or when the temperature is hot. To sweat means for your body to go through the process of creating sweat.
"The athletes were covered in sweat after the game."
8. "check in"
Check-in is a very common phrasal verb we use it at hotels and at the airport, to mean you announce your arrival to a person who works there, it's like you are showing up for your reservation.
"I'll check in at 10 p.m."
9. "room number"
A room number is a number assigned to a room where you live or in a hotel room where you're staying.
"Your room number is 514."
10. "room key"
Room key is the word we use specifically for a key you receive for your hotel room. We do not use room key to talk about the key to your house or apartment, this expression is for hotels only.
"Don't lose your room key!"
11. "wake-up call"
A wake-up call is a phone call that you can arrange for at a hotel. You can ask the front desk to call you at a specific time and wake you up.
"Hi, I'd like a wake-up call at fifteen minutes to six in the morning."
12. "check out"
When you check out of a location, usually a hotel or perhaps also a supermarket, it means you finish your stay or you finish your transaction.
"Please check out before 10 a.m."
13. "light"
Light can be used as a noun or as an adjective. And as a verb, actually in this case, we want to focus on light for use in terms of colors and in terms of visuals. So light in this case refers to the opposite of dark.
"Light colors really suit you well."
14. "gold"
Gold is a material and it's also a color. It is a bright and shiny and very valuable material, and when we see it in colors too, it has the same kind of feeling, kind of luxurious and expensive look.
"She wears gold eyeshadow."
15. "pink"
Pink is a very popular color.
Pink in the US is commonly associated with girls. People think of pink as a girl's color but historically, pink was used for boys and blue was used for girls, it just slowly became the reverse over time.
"The towel was pink."
16. "silver"
Like gold, silver is both a color and a material. So silver is quite shiny but it has a colder color than gold. It can also be very valuable and people like to make jewelry out of silver, just like gold.
"I think silver looks better on you."
17. "beige"
Beige is a neutral color. Beige is like tan but it's a little bit light.
"Beige is a pale cream color with a yellowish tint."
18. "raspberry"
A raspberry is a fruit. They are rather small and they can be quite tart. So tart means a little bit sour and a little bit sweet, they have kind of a surprising taste.
"I'm simply a huge fan of raspberries."
19. "cough"
Cough is a noun and a verb.
As a noun, it refers to a bad health condition; as a verb, to cough means to force the air out of your lungs, usually to try to remove something.
"She has been coughing all night."
20. "garlic"
Garlic is a very popular ingredient in food. It can be used in soups and pizzas and sauces, so many different foods and so many different cuisines around the world love to use garlic. It has a very strong smell and a very strong taste, so you might smell like garlic even after you eat it.
"Cheese and garlic are always good on pizza."
