In this video, you'll learn 20 of the most common words and phrases in English.
Hi everybody, my name is Alisha.
Welcome to The 800 Core English Words and Phrases video series!
This series will teach you the eight hundred most common words and phrases in English.
Ok! Let's get started! First is…
1. "hopeful"
Hopeful describes the feeling that you have when you have a very positive expectation of something.
"I am hopeful that my next summer vacation will be very good."
2. "deep"
Deep refers to something that is far below the surface of something else, like with water or maybe with caves as well.
"This pool is too deep for me."
3. "shallow"
Shallow is the opposite of deep; it refers to something that's very close to the surface of something else.
"Don't worry; the water is very shallow here."
4. "rich"
Rich refers to someone that has a lot of money. We can also use this to talk about food, something that has a lot of flavor.
"His father is a rich man."
5. "poor"
Poor is the opposite of rich when talking about wealth, it refers to someone who does not have a lot of money.
We also use the word "poor" to refer to something that is not of good quality.
"The man is poor."
6. "monitor"
A monitor is a screen that you use to look at information. If you have a computer at home, you probably have a monitor.
"This monitor is broken."
7. "keyboard"
A keyboard is the device that you use to type letters, to type words in your computer.
"This computer doesn't have a keyboard."
8. "headphones"
Headphones are the devices that you use to listen to music. You can put them on your ears or in your ears.
"The girl is listening to music with headphones."
9. "hiccup"
A hiccup is something that happens in your body, it's like when air gets caught in your chest.
It often happens many times in a row and can be very uncomfortable.
"When you have to hiccup, it is hard to talk."
10. "blueberry"
Blueberry is just as it sounds, it's a berry that is the color blue. They can be a little sweet or a little sour.
"Blueberries are round."
11. "prune"
A prune is a dried fruit, it's a dried plum.
"Prunes are dried plums."
12. "mango"
A mango is a tropical fruit. It's usually a bright orange or a yellowy orange and it's very sweet.
"How much is that mango?"
13. "lemon"
A lemon is a bright yellow citrus fruit. It's used a lot in cooking and it has a very sharp flavor.
"I like tea with lemon."
14. "buttocks"
So the buttocks refers to the part of the body that we sit on, this is often abbreviated to just "butt."
"She fell backwards landing hard on her buttocks."
15. "shoulder"
The shoulder is this part of the body, it connects our arm to our torso.
"He broke his shoulder while playing football."
16. "muscle"
Muscle is the part of the body that allows us to move. Muscles are all throughout the body and when we exercise, they become stronger.
"If you lift weights, you can build your muscles."
17. "bone"
Bone is the hard part of the body inside the body that creates the structure of our body.
"I have strong bones."
18. "beard"
A beard refers to hair grown on the face around the chin; some men really like to grow beards.
"Santa Claus has a long white beard."
19. "sweet potato"
A sweet potato is as it sounds, it's a type of potato that is very sweet. You might eat these in cold weather in particular.
"Today, I had sweet potatoes for breakfast."
20. "mushroom"
A mushroom is a fungus that you can eat. There are many different kinds of mushrooms and they lend interesting flavors to many dishes.
"I love eating mushrooms!"
