In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “How old are you?”

Eric: how old are you?
Becky: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question “How old are you?”
Eric: I'm eighteen years old.
Becky: "I'm eighteen years old.” Listen again as the phrase is repeated slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Eric: (Slow) I'm eighteen years old.
Becky: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is
Eric: I’m
Becky: this is the contraction of “I am”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) I’m
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: I’m
Becky: And next is
Eric: eighteen
Becky: This is a number that is equal to ten plus eight.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) eighteen
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: eighteen
Becky: And next we have
Eric: years old
Becky: meaning “age.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) years old
Becky:Now repeat.
Eric: years old
Becky: Listen to the speaker say “I'm eighteen years old” and then repeat.
Eric: I'm eighteen years old.
Becky: For a different answer, replace “eighteen” with “twenty.”
Eric: twenty
Becky: “Twenty,” a number equivalent to two tens.
Eric: (slow) twenty (regular) twenty
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “twenty.”
Eric: I’m twenty years-old.
Becky: It’s almost the same; simply replace “eighteen” with “twenty.” Say “I'm twenty years old.”
Eric: I’m twenty years old.
Becky: For more practice, replace “twenty” with “eight.”
Eric: eight
Becky: “eight,” a number that is equivalent to five plus three
Eric: (slow) eight (regular) eight
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “eight.”
Eric: I’m eight years old.
Becky: Here we just replace “twenty” with “eight.” Say “I'm eight years old.”
Eric: I’m eight years old.
Becky: Now let’s replace “eight” with “forty-five.”
Eric: forty-five
Becky: “forty-five,” a number that’s equivalent to four tens plus five
Eric: (slow) forty-five (regular) forty-five
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “forty-five.”
Eric: I am forty-five years-old.
Becky: It mostly stays the same; simply replace “eight” with “forty-five.” Say “I'm forty-five years old.”
Eric: I am forty-five years-old.
Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting the United States and someone asks you how old you are. You’re eighteen. What do you say?
Eric: How old are you? (five seconds) I'm eighteen years old.
Becky: Imagine you’re twenty years old. Respond to the question.
Eric: How old are you? (five seconds) I’m twenty years old.
Becky: Now imagine you’re eight years old. Answer the speaker's question.
Eric: How old are you? (five seconds) I’m eight years old.
Becky: Imagine you're forty-five years old. How do you respond?
Eric: How old are you? (five seconds) I’m forty-five years old.
Becky: Now you want to ask someone how old they are. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
