Lesson Transcript

In each lesson of this 25-part series, you'll encounter a common question that English learners come across, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases works by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “How tall are you?”
Eric: How tall are you?
Becky: The first word in the question is
Eric: how
Becky: meaning “in what way, the way in which” in English.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) how
Becky: Listen again and repeat.
Eric: how
{Pause}
Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Eric: tall
Becky: meaning “not small,” or “of more than average height”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) tall
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: tall
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Eric: how tall
{pause}
Becky: And after that
Eric: are
Becky: meaning “to exist.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) are
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: are
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Eric: how tall are
{pause}
Becky: And next is
Eric: you
Becky: meaning “the person you're talking to.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) you
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: you
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Eric: How tall are you?
{pause}
Becky: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question “How tall are you?”
Eric: I'm six feet tall.
Becky: "I'm six feet tall.” or “I’m 183cm tall.” You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Eric: (Slow) I'm six feet tall.
{pause}
Becky: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is
Eric: I’m
Becky: the contraction of “I am”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) I’m
Becky: Now repeat
Eric: I’m
{Pause}
Becky: Next is
Eric: six feet
Becky: “183cm”, or “72 inches tall"
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) six feet
Becky:Now repeat.
Eric: six feet
{Pause}
Becky: And after that is
Eric: tall
Becky: “not small. or “of more than average height”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) tall
Becky:Now repeat.
Eric: tall
{Pause}Becky: Listen to the speaker say “I'm six feet tall” and then repeat.
Eric: “I'm six feet tall
{pause}Becky: To make another phrase, replace “six feet” with “five feet five inches tall.”
Eric: five feet five inches tall
Becky: “165cm or 65 inches tall"
Eric: (slow) five feet five inches tall (regular) five feet five inches tall
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “five feet five inches tall.”
Eric: I'm five feet five inches tall.
Becky: It mostly stays the same, we just replace “six feet” with “five feet five inches tall.” Now say, “I'm five feet five inches tall.”
{pause}
Eric: I'm five feet five inches tall
Becky: For more practice, replace “five feet five inches tall” with “five feet seven inches tall.”
Eric: five feet seven inches tall
Becky: “170cm” or “67 inches tall"
Eric: (slow) five feet seven inches tall (regular) five feet seven inches tall
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “five feet seven inches tall.”
Eric: I'm five feet seven inches tall.
Becky: It’s almost the same, just replace “five feet five inches tall" with “five feet seven inches tall.” Now say, “I'm five feet seven inches tall.”
{pause}
Eric: “I'm five feet seven inches tall.”
Becky: For a different answer, replace “five feet seven inches tall" with “five feet.”
Eric: five feet
Becky: “152.cm or 60 inches tall"
Eric: (slow) five feet (regular) five feet
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “five feet.”
Eric: I am five feet tall.
Becky: Here we just replace five feet five inches tall with five feet. Let’s practice. Say “I'm five feet tall.”
{pause}
Eric: I’m five feet tall.
Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting the United States and someone asks you how tall you are. You’re six feet. What do you say?
Eric: How tall are you? (five seconds) I'm six feet tall.
Becky: Imagine you’re five feet five inches tall. Respond to the question.
Eric: How tall are you? (five seconds) I'm five feet five inches tall.
Becky: Now imagine you’re five feet seven inches tall. Answer the speaker's question.
Eric: How tall are you? (five seconds) I'm five feet seven inches tall.
Becky: Imagine you're five feet. How would you answer?
Eric: How tall are you? (five seconds) I'm five feet tall.
Becky: Now you want to ask that person how tall they are. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Eric: How tall are you?
{pause}
Becky: This is the end of Lesson 14.
