Hi everyone, my name is Bridget and welcome to today's lesson. The topic for this lesson is "Top 10 Lines You'll Need to Reject A Date." Let's get started. |
"Sorry, but I already have another appointment." If someone asks you out for a specific day this is a way of saying you won't be available, you already have plans then. "Sorry, I already have another appointment." |
"Oh, I have to work late today." This is a reasonable way to get out of going on a date you don't want to go on. It's a way of saying you have too much to do at work, you won't have time for anything else in the evening because you have to work late. |
"Oh, I'm late for class, sorry I can't." This is something you would say if you were in school, at university. You're saying that you are running late for a class, you have to get to your class, your lecture. It's a way of getting away from someone. It means you're on a tight schedule. "Oh, sorry I'm running late for class, I can't." |
"I'll be studying for finals." Finals are final exams that come at the end of a school year. This is a good thing to say if you're in school because it shows that you care about your grades, you have too much studying to do to be going on dates with anyone. It's a very valid reason to stay in if you care about your grades. You have too much studying to do to be going out on dates. That's not important, what's important is studying. |
"Oh, I just made plans to go out with the girls tonight, sorry." This is a way of saying you've already made plans with your group of friends. It means you can't do anything else that night because you're already hanging out with your girlfriends, or if you're a guy, you could say you're going out with the guys. You already have plans so sorry you don't have time for a date. |
"I've got to check my schedule. Can I get back to you later?" This is a way of buying yourself some time, it means you're not sure if you're available so you need to double-check your schedule, your calendar, wherever you put down the things that you have to do, your obligations. If you're stinky, this is an easy way to buy yourself some time to make other plans so that you can get back to the person who asks you on the date and say, "Actually, I checked my schedule I have something that day," "I'm busy that day." |
"I'm sorry I already have a boyfriend or a girlfriend." This is a very, very common way of rejecting people. A lot of times at a bar if someone comes up to you, "Sorry, I already have a boyfriend," It means that you already have a significant other in your life and you're not looking for anything romantic with anyone else. It shows you're not available so they should turn their sights elsewhere. |
"I'm not really interested in seeing anyone right now." This is a very direct way of telling someone that you're not looking for anything romantic with anyone. It means you're happy to be single, to be on your own, not caught up in any romantic entanglements. You're saying, "I'm actually not interested in what you're interested." If that person is coming up to you and trying to get something started romantically, asking you out on a date, you're saying, "Actually, I'm not interested in anything romantic in my life right now." |
"I'm sorry, I just don't like you in that way." This is a very direct way of rejecting someone, sometimes it's so direct that it actually hurts someone else's feelings. You're telling them you don't see them in a romantic way at all, you're not attracted to them romantically. To say, "I don't see you in that way," it means I don't see you in a romantic way at all. |
"I just want to be friends." This is a very, very, very common way to reject someone. I know I've used it. It means that you have a friend who may start having feelings for you and they ask you if you want to do something romantic, maybe go on a date or something and this is how you say, "Our friendship means so much to me and I don't want to risk it. I just want to be friends. I don't want to be anything more than friends. I don't want to be dating. I just want to be pals." |
