"On the Road Again" is a song written and recorded by Willie Nelson. It is one of the most famous songs of his long career. The song is featured on the soundtrack to the movie Honeysuckle Rose, in which Willie Nelson played the lead role. "On the Road Again," as the title suggests, is about the life of a singer on tour. Nelson based the lyrics on his own experiences touring around the world to perform and how he wanted to be on the road again.
Released in 1980, "On the Road Again" became a success as a single, topping the country music charts. It was Willie Nelson's ninth number 1 hit on the country charts and his sixth as a solo artist. On the Billboard Hot 100, the song reached number 20 and was Nelson's highest charting entry until "Always on My Mind" cracked the Top 10.
Fans and critics have appreciated the honest and plain approach Nelson took to the song. Its simplicity made it an outstanding success. He won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song as well as being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
