Top US 10 Cities and Regions - Los Angeles
Los Angeles (commonly referred to as L.A.), California is the most populous city in the state and the second most populated city in the United States. The population of Los Angeles based on the 2010 census was 3,792,621 people. This city is made up of eighty districts and neighborhoods and covers five counties. The nickname for this city is "The City of Angels" because in Spanish, "Los Angeles" means "the Angels."
The economy of this area is made up of international trade from the Port of Los Angeles, located twenty miles south of downtown, which adjoins the Port of Long Beach. Together, these ports are the fifth busiest in the world and vital to trade between the United States and the Pacific Rim. Other key industries in this area include the entertainment industry, aerospace, technology, fashion, manufacturing, and tourism.
There is a huge network of freeways and highways that connect the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Public transportation is made up of extensive bus lines, subway, and light rail, with a combined daily ridership of over one million. This city also is home to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which is the third busiest airport in the United States and the sixth busiest commercial airport in the world.
This city was founded in 1781 by the Spanish and was part of Mexico until 1821. In 1848, this area was purchased by the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
Los Angeles is home to several professional sports teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers (baseball), Los Angeles Kings (hockey), Los Angeles Clippers (basketball), and Los Angeles Lakers (basketball). This city is also home to more than three hundred museums and art galleries. In addition, there are three public universities located within this city, including California State University, Los Angeles; California State University, Northridge (CSUN), and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
