Keith: Hi, I’m Keith.
Sadia: Hey, and I’m Sadia. We talked about social media. Today, we're going
to talk about social networking.
Keith: Well, "social networking"
refers to using websites like MySpace and
Facebook-- and these are called "social network services"-- and these are for the
purpose of connecting to and interacting with your
friends (or, your "social network").
Sadia: And sometimes people use social network services for the purpose of making new connections and maybe new
friends. Online social networking as we know it today
began sometime I think in the mid- to late 90s.
Keith: Yeah, you're probably right. I think today, though, there are all
sorts of tools and websites to help
you keep "connected."
Sadia: Typical social networking sites allow users
to create personal profiles that include things like photographs
and other personal information like location,
occupation, interests, and they also let users connect with people
they know personally.
Keith: Personally or even people that they meet on the Internet, too.
Sadia: Ah, that’s true.
Keith: I think that’s an interesting part of social
networking-- the ability to virtually "meet" new
people.
Sadia: So easy-- I mean an introduction is just a few
keystrokes and a couple clicks away, right?
Keith: And some of the more popular social networking sites in
America include MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and of
course, Facebook.
Sadia: Ahh, the Facebook. [laughs] The most popular
social networking site in the world, right?
Keith: I think so. Yeah.
Sadia: Yeah, I think it’s safe to say that. They have more than 200
million active users.
Keith: Two hundred million.
Sadia: It’s insane, even though I'm one of
the 200 million!
Keith: Well, yeah, me too!
Sadia So, our listeners may already know that Facebook
allows users to connect with people within their
"social network"-- or their group of friends--
Keith: And, you can also connect to your friends' friends, too!
Sadia: And as with most other social networking sites, you can
post photos, videos, status updates, blog posts, and
links to things you've found on the web.
Keith: The idea is that you'll stay connected to
your friends, and maybe make new ones who share
similar interests.
Sadia: Social networking does have its supporters and its, uh,
detractors -- people who aren’t that into it. Some people love it, and some people hate it.
Keith: Some love the easy access to others and
the ability to create virtual relationships with others.
Sadia: But others think that social networking is an
invasion of privacy that, rather than bringing people
together, actually pushes them apart by eliminating the
need for face-to-face contact.
Keith: Well, Sadia, what do you think?
Sadia: Hmm, that’s a good question. I feel like it’s a little bit of both.
Keith: Yeah, I love it, and I also hate it.
Sadia: Exactly.
Keith: Well, how about you, listeners, what do you think? Are you a fan of social
networking?
Sadia: Do you use any social networking services? Why or
