Keith: Hi, I’m Keith.
Sadia: Hey and I’m Sadia.
Keith: All right, today we’re talking about blogs and blogging!
Sadia: Blogging! Alright-- I'm sure our listeners have heard of blogs and blogging, right?
Keith: Probably. They may not know, however, that the word "blog" is short for weblog.
Sadia: And a weblog is a website that is updated frequently-- sometimes many times in one day.
Keith: The entries in a blog are usually posted in reverse chronological order, which means that the newest entries, called posts, appear at the top of the webpage.
Sadia: Blogs began probably around the late 90s and have become more and more popular since then. Actually, the word, "weblog" was coined by this guy named Jorn Berger, he was a
programmer who kept one of the earliest blogs, which was called "Robot Existence."
Keith: "Robot Existence”, huh?
Sadia: Haha, yeah. Blogs began as personal accounts of events or chronicles or lists of things.
Keith: But today there are blogs for every topic you can think of; like gardening, hair, cage fighting, cupcakes, drumming, music, everything is covered.
Sadia: Yeah definitely and It has to be because there are more than 100 MILLION blogs out there.
Keith: Wow, 100 million, huh?
Sadia: Insane, that's like the size of the population of, like, Mexico-- or, like, the Philippines!
Keith: Bigger than some countries too, huh? That’s a lot, huh?
Sadia: It is. Another interesting tidbit for our listeners - BLOGOSPHERE. The blogosphere refers to the whole community of blogs on the internet-- all of them.
Keith: So, if you hear a pundit, or expert on the television news, talking about what's hot in the blogosphere, you know that they mean what's popular among bloggers.
Sadia: Also, blog is a noun, but you can also use it as a verb, as in “to blog”. For example, I'm going to blog about that concert I went to the other day.
Keith: Today it seems EVERYONE has a blog.
Sadia: It does, right? I think that’s because it's practically true!
Keith: And you know what, we blog too!
Sadia: We do! In fact, EnglishClass101.com is itself a kind of blog. We update it everyday with information we create ourselves, so we do blog!
Keith: Listeners, we got a question - do you blog?
Sadia: Share your URL with us in the comments section!
Sadia : Let's take a look at some of the vocabulary for this Buzzwords lesson.
