Lesson Transcript

Hi, everybody. My name is Alisha.
Welcome to the 2000 Core English Words and Phrases video series.
Each lesson will help you learn new words, practice and review what you've learned.
Okay, let's get started. First is
Camera.
A camera is a device we use to take pictures.
Many of us have a smartphone, which means that there's a camera inside the phone.
But you can also, of course, have a dedicated camera for taking pictures and video.
Here's an example.
The interested monkey is looking into the camera.
Enjoy.
To enjoy something means to have a lot of fun with something, to have a great time with something.
So we can talk about enjoying an experience, we can talk about enjoying something that we ate.
So to enjoy something means that we are having fun.
Here's an example.
Relax and enjoy the movie.
Hungry.
Hungry is an adjective. It means that we feel that we really need to eat.
Our stomach is empty.
Sometimes when we feel really hungry, our stomach starts to hurt.
Here's an example.
The boy is hungry.
Thirsty.
Thirsty is an adjective that describes the feeling when we need to drink water.
So when we feel thirsty, our mouth might feel dry, we might start to feel irritated or maybe get a headache.
So when we are thirsty, we need to drink something.
Here's an example.
The man is thirsty.
Condiment.
A condiment is a topping, usually a sauce or perhaps a dip that we like to put on top of other foods like sandwiches, hot dogs and so on.
Here's an example.
Ketchup, mustard, and salsa are the condiments I most often use.
Salt.
Salt is that very, very fine small white substance that we put on our food.
We often like to shake a little bit of salt on top of our food as it enhances the flavor a lot.
Here's an example.
Pass the salt.
Sugar.
Sugar is another very, very fine thin white substance but we usually don't shake it on top of our food.
Sugar is very sweet and so we use it a lot in desserts. Sugar is usually an ingredient in something but you might use it in your coffee for example. Here's an example.
Most sugar comes from sugar cane or beets and is a natural sweetener.
Vinegar.
Vinegar is a liquid.
This is not a solid material.
Vinegar is often used in cooking and in things like salad dressings for example to give a very strong kind of intense flavor.
Here's an example.
When wine goes bad, it turns into vinegar.
Butter.
Butter is that light yellow substance that often comes in a brick shape like a square or rectangle shape and we usually use it to spread it on toast, to put it on top of things like potatoes for example.
We might also use it a lot in our cooking to make something a little bit more fatty and delicious.
Here's an example.
She would make dinner if only she had butter.
Hot sauce.
Hot sauce is a type of condiment.
So hot sauce means a very, very spicy sauce.
So the hot here doesn't mean temperature.
It means something that is very, very spicy.
Here's an example.
My friends compete to see who can make the hottest hot sauce.
