INTRODUCTION
John: Everyday Slang Expressions
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to EnglishClass101.com. I'm John.
Sydney: And I'm Sydney!
John: This is Must-Know American Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 1. In this lesson, you'll learn some everyday slang expressions.
John: You'll often hear these expressions during regular conversations as part of the interactions of daily life.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Sydney: sweet
Sydney: awesome
Sydney: LOL
Sydney: dead
John: Sydney, what's our first expression?
Sydney: sweet
John: This literally means "a sugary taste." But when it’s used as a slang expression, it means "cool" or "nice."
Sydney: [SLOW] sweet [NORMAL] sweet
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Sydney: sweet
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you think something is nice or you're happy about something. You can also describe people with "sweet" to mean that the person is very kind-hearted and nice to be around.
Sydney: And "a sweet deal" means a good bargain.
John: But you should be careful, this usage is very informal and only used amongst young people. Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Sydney: [NORMAL] "She's such a sweet girl. She's always so positive and helpful." [SLOW] "She's such a sweet girl. She's always so positive and helpful."
Sydney: [NORMAL] "She's such a sweet girl. She's always so positive and helpful."
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Sydney: awesome
John: meaning "very great."
Sydney: [SLOW] awesome [NORMAL] awesome
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Sydney: awesome
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when describing something very wonderful or fantastic.
Sydney: For example, if your friend got first place in a competition, you can congratulate him or her by saying, "That's awesome!"
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Sydney: [NORMAL] You got that job you applied for? That's awesome! Congratulations! [SLOW] You got that job you applied for? That's awesome! Congratulations!
Sydney: [NORMAL] You got that job you applied for? That's awesome! Congratulations!
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Sydney: LOL
John: meaning "laugh out loud."
Sydney: [SLOW] LOL [NORMAL] LOL
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Sydney: LOL
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when something is really funny. LOL is an acronym for "laugh out loud," and was first used on the internet to say that someone laughed out loud at something.
Sydney: This term is still much more common on the internet, in written form, so if someone says LOL in a conversation, they might get some weird looks.
John: Right, this expression is used by younger people and is very informal.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Sydney: [NORMAL] "LOL! this video is so funny!" [SLOW] "LOL! this video is so funny!"
Sydney: [NORMAL] "LOL! this video is so funny!"
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Sydney: dead
John: meaning "someone who is deceased," but when it’s used as a slang expression, it means a place that’s "empty," or "not popular."
Sydney: [SLOW] dead [NORMAL] dead
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Sydney: dead
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when describing a place where there are not a lot of people or an unpopular place.
Sydney: For example, if you and your friends go out on a Saturday night to a bar, and there are only a few people there, you can say, "This bar is really dead."
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Sydney: [NORMAL] "This club is dead, let's go to another one." [SLOW] "This club is dead, let's go to another one."
Sydney: [NORMAL] "This club is dead, let's go to another one."
QUIZ
John: Okay listeners, are you ready to be quizzed on the expressions you just learned? I will describe four situations, and you will choose the right expression to use in your reply. Are you ready?
John: A student gets 100% on a hard test.
[pause - 5 sec.]
Sydney: awesome
John: "very great"
John: You find $10 on the ground.
