Michael: Must-Know English Social Media Phrases Season 1. Lesson 20 - Arriving Home.
Michael: Hi everyone, I'm Michael.
Alisha: And I'm Alisha.
Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn how to post and leave comments in English about returning home after a trip. Jennifer returns home after a vacation, posts an image of it, and leaves this comment:
Alisha: "Traveling is nice, but home is the best! Home sweet home!"
Michael: Listen to a reading of the post and the comments that follow.
DIALOGUE
(clicking sound)
Jennifer: "Traveling is nice, but home is the best! Home sweet home!"
(clicking sound)
Howard: "Welcome back!"
Rick: "Nah, personally I think the grass is greener on the other side!"
Wendy: "But honey, you were away for only a week!"
Liz: "Wish I could go on a holiday too!"
POST
Michael: Listen again to Jennifer's post.
Alisha: (SLOW) "Traveling is nice, but home is the best! Home sweet home!"
Alisha: (Regular) "Traveling is nice, but home is the best! Home sweet home!"
Michael: Let's break this down.
Alisha: First is the expression "Traveling is nice, but home is the best!"
Michael: Some people like to travel but always enjoy coming home to their regular environment and lives. Travel can be exhausting but enjoyable at the same time. The busiest time for air travel in America is around Thanksgiving and Christmas, when a lot of people travel to their hometowns for the holidays and family gatherings. Listen again.
Alisha: (SLOW) "Traveling is nice, but home is the best!" (REGULAR) "Traveling is nice, but home is the best!"
Michael: Then comes the phrase...
Alisha: "Home sweet home!"
Michael: This is an expression used when one returns home after being away for some time, to express the idea that one is happy to be home. Listen again.
Alisha: (SLOW) "Home sweet home!" (REGULAR) "Home sweet home!"
Michael: All together...
Alisha: "Traveling is nice, but home is the best! Home sweet home!"
COMMENTS
Michael: In response, Jennifer's friends leave some comments.
Michael: Her supervisor, Howard, says...
Alisha: (SLOW) "Welcome back!" (REGULAR) "Welcome back!"
[Pause]
Alisha: "Welcome back!"
Michael: Use this expression to welcome someone home.
Michael: Her college friend, Rick, says...
Alisha: (SLOW) "Nah, personally I think the grass is greener on the other side!" (REGULAR) "Nah, personally I think the grass is greener on the other side!"
[Pause]
Alisha: "Nah, personally I think the grass is greener on the other side!"
Michael: Use this expression to show you enjoy traveling and think you would enjoy traveling more than being in your regular environment.
Michael: Her high school friend, Wendy, says...
Alisha: (SLOW) "But honey, you were away for only a week!" (REGULAR) "But honey, you were away for only a week!"
[Pause]
Alisha: "But honey, you were away for only a week!"
Michael: Use this expression to be humorous about the other person not being away for a long time.
Michael: Her friend, Liz, says...
Alisha: (SLOW) "Wish I could go on a holiday too!" (REGULAR) "Wish I could go on a holiday too!"
[Pause]
