| Becky: Number 1, It’s unrealistic, because... you want to be fluent by September and you just started now? |
| Peter: That’s a huge goal and you’re going to set yourself up for failure. |
| Becky: Number 2, It’s not measurable. |
| Peter: I mean how do you define fluency? It’s a very open ended question. So you’re not even defining your goal. |
| Becky: You really can’t aim for “fluency” because that’s very vague. |
| Peter: Exactly. And number 3, There’s no action plan. How will you do it? Most learners have no plan and they end up failing. |
| Becky: So, to set a goal that you will achieve, you need these 3 crucial rules. |
| Peter: Number 1, It has to be realistic. For example... learn 100 new words this month. A small monthly goal is a lot more realistic than ‘becoming fluent by September’, right? |
| Becky: Right. It’s also measurable. That’s rule number 2. You know you need to learn 100 words... |
| Peter:... and you know you need to know them by the end of this month. So either you know them... |
| Becky: ...Or you don't! And rule number 3, You need an action plan: How will you learn 100 words in a month? |
| Peter: Take those 100 words, divide by 4 weeks in a month and learn 25 a week, or 5 a day for 5 days. Give yourself weekends off. |
| Becky: And you can do it with flashcards, for 30 minutes a day during your designated study time. |
| Peter: And that’s how you easily reach a goal in 1 month. Then, you can aim for more. |
