Lesson Transcript

The bus is an important means of transportation. In many cities, buses are used to get around quickly. There are long term buses as well that are bigger. In city buses you usually pay your fare on the bus, while for long distance buses you can buy your ticket online, over the phone, at the terminal, or perhaps an independent agency depending on the bus company. However, in some cities, the bus system may not be as comfortable as others.
Paying for your ticket on a city bus is easy. Fares are usually written at bus stops, or you can ask the bus driver if you're not sure. The question you'll be asking is, How much is it? Bring some change or dollar bills with you.
If you buy a ticket for a long distance bus, then the easiest way is probably online or over the phone. But just to teach an extra phrase in this lesson, let's pretend that you're buying a ticket at the window. Mind you, this phrase can be used also when you buy any kind of ticket with just a few modifications of course. Let's first pick a city. Let's pick Chicago. So, you can say, one-way ticket to Chicago please. One-way means that you just want to buy a ticket going to Chicago. To Chicago is your destination. Please is the magic word. All together you have one-way ticket to Chicago please. If you want a ticket going there and coming back, you would say, return ticket to Chicago please. Once again, that's return ticket to Chicago please.
Okay, now to close out today's lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll say the phrase or sentence, and why don't you try saying it out loud? Good luck everybody!
- How much is it?
- One-way ticket to Chicago please.
- Return ticket to Chicago please.
All right, that's going to do it for today! See you all soon!
