Dear Claudia!

It's fascinating and true! Sometimes, vowels in English are shortened and this can be due to an accent (regional) difference too. Have you checked out our pronunciation series?

Yes, indeed !

The word "squirrel" is pretty hard to pronounce for a German speaker. :sweat_smile:


I also need to mention there are a huge amount of words which resemble each other but their pronunciation is different. For example:

- "tree" sounds like "bee" but "where have you been ?" ("been" sounds like "gin")

- "to chase" but "purchase"

- "though" but "cough"

- "beat" but "sweat"

- "afford" but "effort"

and so on and so on.
