INTRODUCTION
Read English Instantly! No Knowledge of English Required
We’ve already learned how to ask someone to write information down for you, but what if you need help reading it? In this lesson we’ll cover: “How do you read this?”
SURVIVAL PHRASES
We already looked at the phrase “How do you pronounce this?” in the previous lesson, but the question “How do you read this?” is slightly different. You can use “How do you read this?” when pointing at a sentence.
So, to break it down, we make it a question by starting with the words ‘how do you’, followed by ‘read this’, which you will say while pointing at the phrase.
If there is one part of the sentence that you don’t understand, you could say: “What does this mean?” So we have ‘what does’ for a question, then ‘this word’, and finally ‘mean’. Remember to point at the word you want to know while saying this.
Another useful phrase for this situation is: “What’s another word for it?” You can use this if there is a word in a sentence that you don’t understand, and you want to use another word with the same meaning. To break it down, we start with ‘what’s’, followed by ‘another word’, and finally ‘for it’. In this situation, the person you are asking will try to give you a synonym for the word you don’t know.
Okay, to close out this lesson we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I’ll provide you with the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So good luck!
- How do you read this?
- What does this word mean?
- What’s another word for it?
