Welcome to Three Step English Practice by EnglishClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to use superlatives in English. |
Let’s look at the main dialogue. |
Two people are having a conversation. |
I started observing my colleagues more closely. Making note of everything was the smartest thing I ever did. I worked hard, and when I finally got that promotion, it was one of the best days of my life. |
What an inspiring story! |
In this dialogue, this character |
Is describing events in his past using superlatives. |
First, he says that making a note of everything was "the smartest thing" he ever did. "Smartest" is the superlative form of "smart." It's formed by appending "-est" to the end of "smart." |
A bit later, he says when he finally got a promotion, it was "one of the best days" of his life. "Best" is the superlative form of "good." |
By saying it was "one of" the best days, he implies that there were other days of his life that were of the same, or greater, quality. |
Let’s practice with this grammar more in this lesson. |
