Welcome to Three Step English Practice by EnglishClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to use superlatives in English.
Let’s look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
I started observing my colleagues more closely. Making note of everything was the smartest thing I ever did. I worked hard, and when I finally got that promotion, it was one of the best days of my life.
What an inspiring story!
In this dialogue, this character
Is describing events in his past using superlatives.
First, he says that making a note of everything was "the smartest thing" he ever did. "Smartest" is the superlative form of "smart." It's formed by appending "-est" to the end of "smart."
A bit later, he says when he finally got a promotion, it was "one of the best days" of his life. "Best" is the superlative form of "good."
By saying it was "one of" the best days, he implies that there were other days of his life that were of the same, or greater, quality.
Let’s practice with this grammar more in this lesson.
