Do you know how to make polite requests in English? |
Welcome to Three Step English Practice by EnglishClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to make polite requests in English. |
Let’s look at the main dialogue. |
Two people are having a conversation. |
It would be great if you sent those to me as soon as possible. |
No problem. What about the outstanding invoices from last month? |
I would appreciate it if you forwarded those to me as well. |
Notice the past forms we used in this dialogue: sent, forwarded. They don't mean past time here, simply making the request sound more tentative and courteous. |
Remember the main pattern we've learned? |
Subject + would + bare infinitive phrase, + if + past tense clause |
And the alternative version? |
If + past tense clause, + subject + would + bare infinitive phrase. |
Let’s practice this grammar more in this lesson. |
