Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to make polite requests in English?
Welcome to Three Step English Practice by EnglishClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to make polite requests in English.
Let’s look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
It would be great if you sent those to me as soon as possible.
No problem. What about the outstanding invoices from last month?
I would appreciate it if you forwarded those to me as well.
Notice the past forms we used in this dialogue: sent, forwarded. They don't mean past time here, simply making the request sound more tentative and courteous.
Remember the main pattern we've learned?
Subject + would + bare infinitive phrase, + if + past tense clause
And the alternative version?
If + past tense clause, + subject + would + bare infinitive phrase.
Let’s practice this grammar more in this lesson.
