Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to talk about mistakes or bad decisions in English?
Welcome to Three Step English Practice by EnglishClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice "how to discuss wrong decisions or business mistakes."
Let’s look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
I admit, your resume is impressive! You seem a bit overqualified for an assistant position.
If I hadn’t taken time off from school, I would be farther in my career right now.
I see. And why do you think you would be a good fit for this job?
In this dialogue, we see an example of a mixed conditional. The speaker says, "If I hadn’t taken time off from school, I would be farther in my career right now."
This structure is used to talk about how a past event—taking time off from school—is affecting the present situation—not being as far along in their career.
We use the pattern:
If + past perfect clause, subject + would + base verb (present)
Let’s practice with this grammar more in this lesson.
