“What are you doing?” in English.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What are you doing?”
Eric: “What are you doing?”
Becky: The first word in the question is
Eric: “what”
Becky: It’s a question word used to ask for more information.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “what”
Becky: Listen again and repeat.
Eric: “what”
Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Eric: “are”
Becky: meaning “to exist.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “are”
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: “are”
Becky: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Eric: “what are..”
Becky: Next is

Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “you”
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: “you”
Becky: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.

Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “thinking”

Eric: (slow) “watching TV”(regular) “watching TV”
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “watching TV.”
Eric: “I’m watching TV.”
Becky: It’s almost the same, we just replace “thinking” with “watching TV.” Say “I'm watching TV.”

Becky: To use a different phrase, replace “watching TV” with “cooking.”
Eric: “cooking”
Becky: meaning “making food.”
Eric: (slow) “cooking” (regular) “cooking”
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “cooking.”
Eric: “I’m cooking.”

Eric: “I’m sleeping.”
Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting the United States and someone asks you what you're doing. You’re thinking. What would you tell them?
Eric: What are you doing? (five seconds) "I'm thinking."
Becky: Now imagine you’re watching tv. Respond to the question.
Eric: What are you doing? (five seconds) “I’m watching TV.”
Becky: Imagine you’re cooking. How would you answer?
Eric: What are you doing? (five seconds) “I’m cooking.”
Becky: Imagine you're sleeping. What would you say?
Eric: What are you doing? (five seconds) “I’m sleeping.”
