This Buzzwords lesson introduces you to some of the words and phrases related to social networking. What social networking tools do you use? What do you think of social networking? Is it a convenient way for friends to come together? Or a fast way to push friends apart?

Hello Qossai ๐Ÿ˜„

In response to your question:

"Social media has changed the the way we communicate" and "Social media changed the way we communicate" have the same meaning. If you choose to add the word 'has' it just gives the statement more emphasis.

Feel free to ask us any questions you have throughout your studies.

Cheers,

Eva

Hi,

What's the difference between the below both sentences?

1. Social media has changed the the way we communicate.

2. Social media changed the way we communicate. (without the โ€hasโ€)

Thanks

Qossai

Hello Ahmed,

Thank you for posting your thoughts. Below I have made some corrections to your statement to help you perfect your English:

"I think social media is a more credible source of information than traditional media, which is very biased and controlled by the people who have money or power.

As for using it as a tool of communication, it a paradox. It connects people who live far from each other but at the same time, it pushes people who live together apart."

That last line really made me giggle. :D It's so true!

Let us know if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Patricia

The way that I think of social media is that it is a more credible source of information in opposite to the traditional media which is so biased and controlled by people who have money or power.

As for using it as a tool of communication, it a paradox.it connects people who live far from each other but at the same time, it pushes people who live together apart.

you like to correct people, don't you Keith *g*

thanks again. I like to "swallow" the will.. I am bad, I know ^^

Is there another way to express a current development that will continue but without using a future tense in order to emphasizes on the current situation? I'm just curious.

(do I really have to answer in complete sentences? *is lazy*)

Hey Salivia!

Please let me give you some corrections :)

it doesnโ€™t mean that people stop learning an instrument. -> it doesnโ€™t mean people will stop learning instruments.

As for how I use social media? To stay in contact with friends or learn, do research and so on. -> As for how I use social media? I use it to stay in contact with friends or learn, do research and so on.

Thanks for yet another insightful comment, Salivia!

You are right-- media is an "umbrella term" that includes BOTH "one-to-one" and "one-to-many" communication. Thanks for the correction-- we'll amend our dictionary entry accordingly as soon as we can!

I don't think that social media will take over. It will add to the already existing media with new possibilities. For example just because we can make music digitally it doesn't mean that people stop learning an instrument. Or when they discovered how to record music concerts and live music didn't go away either.

We still have books although there are ebooks or audio books. It is something different. Sure a lot will go into the electronic media but not all. There is just a shift not a replacing going on.

As for how I use social media? To stay in contact with friends or learn, do research and so on. But I think some things go too far, like stalking your friends (or worse strangers). There is also some security risk on some sites (I won't go to sites like facebook or myspace. yikes!)

btw. media is not short for mass media. media is everything (one to one and one to many communication) mass media is where it can reach a lot of people (one to many communication)
