INTRODUCTION
Riding the Bus, Part 2: Does This Bus Go To...?
In the previous lesson, we covered how to buy a bus ticket. So now that you have your ticket, it’s time to jump on the bus! But, wait, before you get on, you need to make sure it’s going to your destination.
SURVIVAL PHRASES
To check where the bus is going, you can ask: “Excuse me, does this go to…” and then state your destination.
Excuse me, does this go to…”
You don’t have to say ‘bus’, since it’s obvious. Remember, it’s better to start your request with ‘excuse me’ or ‘hello’ to sound polite.
This question needs the helping verb ‘does’ and the word ‘this’ to indicate the bus. Finally, you need to add the main verb, ‘go to’.
Another way to ask this question is by saying: “Excuse me, does this stop at…” Once again we have the phrase ‘excuse me’ and the helping verb ‘does’, followed by ‘this stop at’.
Imagine you are visiting a city for the first time, and have no idea about the distance between your favourite destinations.
To find out, you could ask the bus driver: “How long does it take to…?” We start with ‘how long’ to ask for the distance or time between two places. In this situation, the driver will most likely give you a measurement of time, such as ’30 minutes’.
“How long does it take to…?”
Okay, to close out this lesson we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I’ll provide you with the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So good luck!
- Excuse me, does this go to…?
- Excuse me, does this stop at...?
- How long does it take to…?

Alright! That’s going to do it for this lesson. Bye!
