“What's your name?” in English |
In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for English learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations. |
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What's your name?”. |
Eric : What is your name? |
Becky: The first word in the question is |
Eric : what |
Becky: This is a question word used to ask for more information. |
Eric : (Slow, by syllable) what |
Becky: Listen again and repeat. |
Eric : what |
Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is - |
Eric : is |
Becky: meaning “to exist.” |
Eric : (Slow, by syllable) is |
Becky: Now repeat. |
Eric : is |
Becky: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat. |
Eric : what is |
Becky: The next word in the question is - |
Eric : your |
Becky: meaning “belonging to you” |
Eric : (Slow, by syllable) your |
Becky: Now repeat. |
Eric : your |
Becky: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat. |
Eric : what is your |
Becky: And last one is |
Eric : name |
Becky: This is the word by which an object or person is known. |
Eric : (Slow, by syllable) name |
Becky: Now repeat. |
Eric : name |
Becky: Listen to the entire question and repeat. |
Eric : What is your name? |
Becky: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “What's your name?” |
Eric : My name is Lisa. |
Becky: Listen again as you hear the phrase slowly. Repeat the phrase. |
Eric : (Slow) My name is Lisa. |
Becky: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is |
Eric : My |
Becky: meaning “something belonging to me.” |
Eric : (Slow, by syllable) My |
Becky: Now repeat. |
Eric : My |
Becky: And next is |
Eric : name |
Becky: This is the word by which an object or person is known. |
Eric : (Slow, by syllable) name |
Becky: Now repeat. |
Eric : name |
Becky: And next is |
Eric : is |
Becky: meaning “to exist.” |
Eric : (Slow, by syllable) is |
Becky: Now repeat. |
Eric : is |
Becky: Next is |
Eric : Lisa |
Becky: which is the name “Lisa.” |
Eric : (Slow, by syllable) Lisa |
Becky: Now repeat. |
Eric : Lisa |
Becky: Listen to the entire phrase again and then repeat. |
Eric : My name is Lisa. |
Becky: To expand on the pattern, let’s replace “Lisa” with “Peter.” |
Eric : Peter |
Eric : (slow) Peter (regular) Peter |
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Peter.” |
Eric : My name is Peter. |
Becky: You’ll see that it’s almost the same. Simply replace “Lisa” with “Peter.” |
Eric : My name is Peter. |
Becky: Let’s try another and replace “Peter” with “Sara.” |
Eric : Sara |
Eric : (slow) Sara (regular) Sara |
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Sara.” |
Eric : My name is Sara. |
Becky: Again, it mostly stays the same. Simply replace the name “Peter” with “Sara.” Now say, “My name is Sara.” |
Eric : My name is Sara. |
Becky: For more practice, replace “Sara” with “Viktor.” |
Eric : Viktor |
Becky: Viktor |
Eric : (slow) Viktor (regular) Viktor |
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Viktor.” |
Eric : My name is Viktor. |
Becky: Again, all you have to do is replace the name. Now try saying “My name is Viktor.” |
Eric : My name is Viktor. |
Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. |
Becky: Imagine you're visiting United States and someone asks you your name. Your name is Lisa. How will you answer? |
Eric : What's your name? (five seconds) My name is Lisa. |
Becky: Now your name is Peter. Respond to the question again. |
Eric : What's your name? (five seconds) My name is Peter. |
Becky: Imagine your name is Sara. Answer the speaker's question. |
Eric : What's your name? (five seconds) My name is Sara. |
Becky: Imagine your name is Viktor. How will you respond? |
Eric : What's your name? (five seconds) My name is Viktor. |
Becky: Now imagine that you want to learn that person's name. Ask the question. |
(5 seconds) |
Eric : What's your name? |
Becky: Now it's time to answer the question with your own name. Be sure to practice out loud! |
Eric: What's your name? |
Becky: This is the end of Lesson 1. |
