“How is the food?” in English
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “How is the food?”
Eric: How is the food?
Becky: The first word in the question is
Eric: how
Becky: meaning “in what way, the way in which” in English.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) how
Becky: Listen again and repeat.
Eric: how
Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Eric: is
Becky: meaning “to exist.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) is
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: is
Becky: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Eric: how is
Becky: And after that is
Eric: the
Becky: This is the definite article.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) the

Becky: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is

Becky: This is the contraction of “It is.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) It’s
Becky: Now repeat
Eric: It’s
Becky: And next
Eric: delicious
Becky: meaning “very tasty, tastes good.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) delicious
Becky:Now repeat.
Eric: delicious
Becky: Listen to the speaker say “It's delicious” and then repeat.
Eric: It's delicious.
Becky: For another answer, replace “delicious” with “sweet.”
Eric: sweet
Becky: “tasting of sugar or honey”
Eric: (slow) sweet (regular) sweet
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “sweet.”
Eric: It’s sweet.
Becky: It mostly stays the same, we just replace “delicious” with “sweet.” Now say, “It's sweet.”
Eric: It’s sweet.
Becky: For more practice, replace “sweet” with “salty.”
Eric: salty
Becky: “tasting of salt”
Eric: (slow) salty (regular) salty
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “salty.”
Eric: It’s salty.
Becky: Again, it’s almost the same, we just replace “sweet” with “salty.” Now say,“It's salty.”
Eric: It’s salty.
Becky: Let’s use a different adjective and replace “salty” with “spicy.”
Eric: spicy
Becky: “hot flavor, seasoned with spice”
Eric: (slow) spicy (regular) spicy
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “spicy.”
Eric: It’s spicy.
Becky: It mostly stays the same, we just replace “salty” with “spicy.” Now say,“It's spicy.”
Eric: It’s spicy.
Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting the United States and someone asks you your opinion of the food you're eating. You want to say it's delicious. How would you answer?
Eric: How is the food? (five seconds) It's delicious.
Becky: Now, you want to say it's sweet. Respond to the question.
Eric: How is the food? (five seconds) It's sweet.
Becky: You want to say it's salty. Answer the speaker's question.
Eric: How is the food? (five seconds) It's salty.
Becky: You want to say it's spicy. What do you say?
Eric: How is the food? (five seconds) It's spicy.
Becky: Now you want to know what that person thinks of the meal. Ask the question.
