Lesson Transcript

In each lesson of this 25-part series, you'll encounter a common question that English learners come across, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases works by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “How is the food?”
Eric: How is the food?
Becky: The first word in the question is
Eric: how
Becky: meaning “in what way, the way in which” in English.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) how
Becky: Listen again and repeat.
Eric: how
{Pause}
Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Eric: is
Becky: meaning “to exist.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) is
Becky: Now repeat.

Eric: (Slow, by syllable) It’s
Becky: Now repeat
Eric: It’s
{Pause}
Becky: And next
Eric: delicious
Becky: meaning “very tasty, tastes good.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) delicious
Becky:Now repeat.

{Pause}Becky: Listen to the speaker say “It's delicious” and then repeat.

Eric: sweet
Becky: “tasting of sugar or honey”
Eric: (slow) sweet (regular) sweet
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “sweet.”
Eric: It’s sweet.
Becky: It mostly stays the same, we just replace “delicious” with “sweet.” Now say, “It's sweet.”

Eric: salty
Becky: “tasting of salt”
Eric: (slow) salty (regular) salty
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “salty.”
Eric: It’s salty.
Becky: Again, it’s almost the same, we just replace “sweet” with “salty.” Now say,“It's salty.”

Eric: It’s salty.
Becky: Let’s use a different adjective and replace “salty” with “spicy.”
Eric: spicy
Becky: “hot flavor, seasoned with spice”
Eric: (slow) spicy (regular) spicy
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “spicy.”
Eric: It’s spicy.
Becky: It mostly stays the same, we just replace “salty” with “spicy.” Now say,“It's spicy.”
{pause}
Eric: It’s spicy.
Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting the United States and someone asks you your opinion of the food you're eating. You want to say it's delicious. How would you answer?
Eric: How is the food? (five seconds) It's delicious.
Becky: Now, you want to say it's sweet. Respond to the question.

Eric: How is the food?
{pause}
