Lesson Transcript

In each lesson of this 25-part series, you'll encounter a common question that English learners come across, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases works by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Where are you from?”
Eric: Where are you from?
Becky: The first word in the question is
Eric: where
Becky: This is a question word used to inquire about location.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) where
Becky: Listen again and repeat.
Eric: where
{Pause}
Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is...
Eric: are
Becky: meaning “to exist.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) are
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: are
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Eric: where are
{pause}
Becky: And next is
Eric: you
Becky: You can use this pronoun to refer to the person you're talking to.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) you
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: you
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Eric: where are you
{pause}
Becky: And finally we have
Eric: from
Becky: This is the preposition indicating the starting point.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) from
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: from
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Eric: where are you from?
{pause}
Becky: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “Where are you from?”.
Eric: I’m from the U.S.
Becky: You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Eric: (Slow) I'm from the U.S.
{pause}
Becky: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Eric: I’m
Becky: contraction of “I am”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) I’m
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: I’m
{Pause}
Becky: And next,
Eric: from
Becky: the preposition indicating the starting point.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) from
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: from
{Pause}
Becky: And next,
Eric: “the U.S.”
Becky: This is the country name for the United States of America
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) the U.S.
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: the U.S.
Becky: Listen to the speaker say “I'm from the U.S.” and then repeat.
Eric: I'm from the U.S.
Becky: Try it again, this time replacing “the U.S.” with “England.”
Eric: England
Becky: this is a country that is part of the United Kingdom in Europe.
Eric: (slow) England (regular) England
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “England.”
Eric: I’m from England.
Becky: As you can hear, it mostly stays the same. Simply replace the country. Say “I'm from England.”
Eric: I’m from England.
Becky: For more practice with the pattern, replace “England” with “Germany.”
Eric: Germany
Becky: Germany is a country in Europe
Eric: (slow) Germany (regular) Germany
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Germany.”
Eric: I’m from Germany.
Becky: It’s almost the same. Replace “England” with “Germany.” Say “I'm from Germany.”
Eric: I’m from Germany.
Becky: To make another phrase, replace “Germany” with “Australia.”
Eric: Australia
Becky: Australia is a country in Oceania
Eric: (slow) Australia (regular) Australia
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Australia.”
Eric: I’m from Australia.
Becky: As you can hear, it’s still the same phrase. Just replace “Germany” with “Australia.” Say “I'm from Australia.”
Eric: I’m from Australia.
Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting the United States and someone asks you where you're from. You're from the U.S. How would you answer?
Eric: Where are you from? (five seconds) I'm from the U.S.
Becky: Now imagine you're from England. Respond to the question.
Eric: Where are you from? (five seconds) I’m from England.
Becky: Now imagine you're from Germany. Can you answer the speaker's question?
Eric: Where are you from? (five seconds) I’m from Germany
Becky: Imagine you're from Australia. Respond to the question.
Eric: Where are you from? (five seconds) I’m from Australia.
Becky: Now you want to ask that person where they're from. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Eric: Where are you from?
Becky: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.
Eric: Where are you from?
Becky: This is the end of Lesson 2.
