“What's the weather like?” in English.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What's the weather like?”
Eric: “What's the weather like?”
Becky: The first word in the question is
Eric: “What’s”
Becky: the contraction of "what is."
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “What’s”
Becky: Listen again and repeat.
Eric: “What’s”
{Pause}
Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Eric: “the”
Becky: This is the definite article.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “the”
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: “the”
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Eric: “What’s the”
{pause}
Becky: And after that is
Eric: “weather”
Becky: meaning “the conditions outside.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “weather”
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: “weather”
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Eric: “What’s the weather”
{pause}
Becky: And after that is
Eric: “like”
Becky: meaning “similar to.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “like”
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: “like”
{pause}
Becky: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Eric: “What’s the weather like?”
{pause}
Becky: You’ll hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “What's the weather like?”
Eric: “It's sunny.”
Becky: "It's sunny.” You’ll hear the phrase one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Eric: (Slow) “It's sunny.”
{pause}
Becky: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is
Eric: “It’s”
Becky: the contraction of "it is."
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “It’s”
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: “It’s”
{Pause}
Becky: And next,
Eric: “sunny”
Becky: meaning “when the sun is bright and visible.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “sunny”
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: “It’s sunny.”
{Pause}Becky: Listen to the speaker say “It's sunny” and then repeat.
Eric: “It’s sunny.”
{pause}Becky: For a different answer, replace “sunny” with “cloudy.”
Eric: “cloudy”
Becky: meaning “when the sky is covered by clouds.”
Eric: (slow) “cloudy” (regular) “cloudy”
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “cloudy.”
Eric: “It’s cloudy.”
Becky: It mostly stays the same, just replace “sunny” with “cloudy.” Now try. Say “It's cloudy.”
{pause}
Eric: “It’s cloudy.”
Becky: For more practice, replace “cloudy” with “rainy.”
Eric: “rainy”
Becky: meaning “when there is rain.”
Eric: (slow) “rainy” (regular) “rainy”
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “rainy.”
Eric: “It’s rainy.”
Becky: It’s almost the same, just replace “cloudy” with “rainy.” Let’s practice. Say “It's rainy.”
{pause}
Eric: “It’s rainy.”
Becky: For a different answer, replace “rainy” with “cold.”
Eric: “cold”
Becky: meaning “not warm, very cool.”
Eric: (slow) “cold” (regular) “cold”
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “cold.”
Eric: “It’s cold.”
Becky: Here we just replace “rainy” with “cold.” Say “It's cold.”
{pause}
Eric: “It’s cold.”
Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting the United States and someone asks you about the weather. You want to say it's sunny. How would you answer?
Eric: What's the weather like? (five seconds) “It's sunny.”
Becky: Now you want to say it's cloudy. Respond to the question.
