“What's this?” in English.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What's this?”
Eric: “What’s this?”
Becky: The first word in the question is
Eric: “what's”
Becky: the contraction of "what is."
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “what's”
Becky: Listen again and repeat.
Eric: “what's”
Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Eric: “this”
Becky: This is a demonstrative pronoun, used to identify something that is close.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “this”
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: “this”
Becky: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Eric: “What’s this?”

Becky: And next is

Becky: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Eric: “It’s a”
Becky: And next is
Eric: “camera”
Becky: It’s a device for taking a picture.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) “camera”
Becky:Now repeat.
Eric: “camera”
Becky: Listen to the speaker say “It's a camera” and then repeat.
Eric: “It’s a camera.”
Becky: To give a different answer, replace “camera” with “watch.”
Eric: “watch”
Becky: It’s an object that tells the time that is usually worn on the wrist.
Eric: (slow) “watch” (regular) “watch”
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “watch.”
Eric: “It’s a watch.”
Becky: It mostly stays the same, simply replace “camera” with “watch.” Now say “It's a watch.”
Eric: “It’s a watch.”
Becky: To expand on the pattern, replace “watch” with “chair.”
Eric: “chair”
Becky: This is an object to sit on.
Eric: (slow) “chair” (regular) “chair”
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “chair.”
Eric: “It’s a chair.”
Becky: Here we just replace “watch” with “chair.” Now say “It's a chair.”
Eric: “It’s a chair.”
Becky: For more practice, replace “chair” with “computer.”
Eric: “computer”

Eric: (slow) “computer” (regular) “computer”

Eric: “It's a computer.”
Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting the United States and someone asks you what something is. It’s a camera. What do you tell them?
Eric: What’s this? (five seconds) “It’s a camera.”
Becky: Now imagine that it's a watch. Respond to the question.

Becky: Imagine that it's a chair. What do you say?
Eric: What’s this? (five seconds) “It’s a chair.”
