Lesson Transcript

In each lesson of this 25-part series, you'll encounter a common question that English learners come across, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases works by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Where do you live?”.
Eric: Where do you live?
Becky: The first word in the question is...
Eric: where
Becky: This is a question word used to inquire about location.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) where
Becky: Listen again and repeat.
Eric: where
{Pause}
Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is...
Eric: do
Becky: meaning “perform the action of.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) do
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: do
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Eric: where do
{pause}
Becky: And next is
Eric: you
Becky: the person you're talking to
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) you
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: you
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Eric: where do you
{pause}
Becky: And next is
Eric: live
Becky: This verb means “to continue being alive”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) live
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: live
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Eric: Where do you live?
{pause}
Becky: Master the following pattern and responses to the question “Where do you live?”
Eric: I live in New York.
Becky: "I live in New York.” The phrase will be repeated, slowly. Listen and repeat the phrase.
Eric: (Slow) I live in New York.
{pause}
Becky: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Eric: I
Becky: This is a singular pronoun used by the person speaking.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) I
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: I
{Pause}
Becky: And next is
Eric: live
Becky: meaning “to continue being alive.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) live
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: live
{Pause}
Becky: And next,
Eric: in
Becky: This is the preposition to indicate inclusion within space or a place
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) in
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: in
{Pause}
Becky: And next is
Eric: New York
Becky: which is “New York.”, a city in the United States.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) New York
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: New York
Becky: Listen to the speaker say “I live in New York” and then repeat.
Eric: I live in New York.
Becky: To expand on the pattern, replace “New York” with “London.”
Eric: London
Becky: “London,” a city in England.
Eric: (slow) London (regular) London
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “London.”
Eric: I live in London.
Becky: It mostly stays the same, just replace “New York” with “London.” Now say, “I live in London.”
{pause}
Eric: I live in London.
Becky: For more practice, replace “London” with “Berlin.”
Eric: Berlin
Becky: “Berlin,” a city in Germany
Eric: (slow) Berlin (regular) Berlin
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Berlin.”
Eric: I live in Berlin.
Becky: Again, it mostly stays the same. Simply replace “London” with “Berlin.” Say “I live in Berlin.”
{pause}
Eric: I live in Berlin.
Becky: Let’s try one more. Replace “Berlin” with “Tokyo.”
Eric: Tokyo
Becky: “Tokyo”, a city in Japan
Eric: (slow) Tokyo (regular) Tokyo
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Tokyo.”
Eric: I live in Tokyo.
Becky: Again, all you have to do is replace “Berlin” with “Tokyo.” Say “I live in Tokyo.”
Eric: I live in Tokyo.
Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting the United States and someone asks where you live. You live in New York. How would you respond?
Eric: Where do you live? (five seconds) I live in New York.
Becky: Imagine you live in London. Respond to the question.
Eric: Where do you live? (five seconds) I live in London.
Becky: Now imagine you live in Berlin. Answer the speaker's question.
Eric: Where do you live? (five seconds) I live in Berlin.
Becky: Imagine you live in Tokyo. How would you answer?
Eric: Where do you live? (five seconds) I live in Tokyo.
Becky: Now you want to ask that person where they live. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Eric: Where do you live?
{pause}
Becky: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.
Eric: Where do you live?
Becky: Could you answer? Keep practicing until you have mastered the phrase! This is the end of Lesson 3.
