Lesson Transcript

In each lesson of this 25-part series, you'll encounter a common question that English learners come across, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases works by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Do you like American food?”
Eric: Do you like American food?
Becky: The first word in the question is
Eric: do
Becky: meaning “to perform the action of” in English.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) do
Becky: Listen again and repeat.
Eric: do
{Pause}
Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Eric: you
Becky: meaning “the person you're talking to.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) you
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: you
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Eric: do you
{pause}
Becky: And after that we have
Eric: like
Becky: meaning “to enjoy something.”
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) like
Becky: Now repeat.
Eric: like
{Pause}
Becky: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Eric: do you like
{pause}
Becky: And after that we have
Eric: American
Becky: meaning “something related to America or the U.S.”

Becky: Now repeat.

Becky: "Yes, I especially love Macaroni and Cheese.” You’ll hear it again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
