This is the verb to miss which can just mean to fail to hit something
But watch until the end and learn four other ways to use it
Hey everybody, welcome back to know your verbs. My name is Alisha. And in this episode, we're going to talk about the verb miss
Let's get started
First let's talk about the basic definition of the verb to miss
to miss means to fail to hit or
To reach here are some examples
Sorry, I missed your call
The sales team missed their target for the month
Okay, now let's take a look at the conjugations for this verb
present tense miss
misses past tense
missed
past participle
missed
progressive missing
Now let's talk about some additional meanings for this verb
the first additional meaning for miss is to feel the absence of someone or
Something here are some examples. I
Miss my family
We missed you at the party last weekend
Okay
In both of these example sentences
We see the word miss the verb miss being used to express that we notice when something is not
There and we want it to be there so we can use this when we talk about people and when we talk about things
So when we miss a person it means we notice that someone is not there and we want them to be there
So in the first example sentence I miss my family it means I notice my family is not near me right now
And I wish they were there in the second example sentence. It's a past tense situation
We missed you at the party last weekend means we noticed that you weren't at the party last weekend
And we were sad we wanted you to be at the party
We noticed that you weren't there and we wish that you could have joined us
So to miss someone is generally a nice thing if someone says they miss you
It means they wish that they could see you the second additional meaning for this verb is to fail to attend
Here are some examples
You've been missing work a lot lately. Are you okay? My friend miss school yesterday and today
Okay
So these example sentences use the verb miss in the sense of not attending something
So we use this sense of miss a lot when we're talking about going to work going to school
Participating in some kind of regular activity. This could be a hobby group anything that has a regular schedule
We expect someone to be there and they're not there
So this relates to attendance a lot in the first example sentence. It's a work situation
You've been missing work a lot lately. This means you haven't been attending work regularly lately
So you've had lots of days off or maybe lots of sick days. Are you okay?
So we might see it used in this way to ask if someone is okay in the second example sentence
We see kind of a report my friend missed school yesterday and today means my friend did not attend school
Yesterday and today so both of those sentences mean the same thing
My friend missed school and my friend did not attend school
But missed is just a shorter more efficient way to say it so we can use miss in this sense to talk about
Attendance in regularly scheduled activities. Okay. The next additional meaning is to leave out or to omit
Here are some examples
I've been so busy today that I completely missed lunch
The news article was missing some important details
Okay
These sentences use the word miss to mean that something was left out or something was omitted in the first example sentence
We talked about missing a meal. Someone is so busy that they completely missed lunch
So that means they completely left out lunch or they omitted lunch from their schedule that day
So it's like there's something that we expect to be there
But we remove it for some reason in this case because the person was busy
So we use this a lot when we talk about skipping meals because we're busy or we just forget or maybe even just we're not
Feeling well that day in the second example sentence. It's about
Information that is omitted. So in this sentence, we have the news article was missing some important information
Which means the person that is speaking expects there to be some more information some important information in the article
But that information is not in the article
It was omitted or left out or maybe the writer didn't know the important information
But the speaker wants to express there's something that should be here, but it's not here
It was missing the information is missing so we can use to miss in this sense, too
To talk about something that is not there that we expect to be there whether it's on purpose or not is a different story
Great. So with these additional meanings in mind now, let's take a look at a variation for this verb
Okay
The variation I want to introduce for this verb is to miss out on to miss out on means to lose a good opportunity
Here are some examples
Sorry, we missed out on your summer party this year I
Made a mistake with my job application and missed out on a good job opportunity
Okay, so these sentences use the expression to miss out on we use this set expression
When we have a chance to do something that seems like it's a really good opportunity
That could be a job opportunity like in the second example sentence or just something fun to do like in the first example
Sentence with the party so when we don't get to do that thing either because our schedule doesn't match or we make a mistake
With a deadline like in the second example sentence
We can express that feeling with the expression to miss out on so we always have that preposition on at the end to miss out
on
Opportunity is the pattern that you can use to express that feeling of regret that you lost a good opportunity
For something special for your career or for something special for entertainment or similar
So this is a really good one to know a very very common expression, too
Okay, great now, let's review what we learned in this lesson
I'll introduce two sample sentences that are both correct
But that have different meanings of the verb choose the example sentence that expresses the appropriate meaning I
Miss my parents
My boss missed our morning meeting
Which sentence uses the to fail to attend meaning of miss
You
The answer is the second example sentence my boss missed the morning meeting this use of miss
Refers to a meeting situation in which someone did not attend
So good hint words that you can use with this version of miss or with this meaning of miss are words that are related to
Scheduled activities like meetings work activities school activities and so on. Those are all related to attendance
So that's a big hint that this use of miss relates to attending or not attending in this case great
So with this in mind, let's move on to the second review question. Oh
No, we missed out on the discount ticket sale
I missed three calls while I was in a meeting
Which sentence uses the to lose a good opportunity meaning of miss
The answer is the first example sentence, oh no, we missed out on the discount ticket sale
So this sentence expresses that we lost a good opportunity. We missed our chance to have the discounted tickets
We missed our chance to buy the discounted tickets
So a big hint that this is the correct example sentence here is that oh no at the beginning
So we're expressing some kind of regret
So we often express that sort of sadness or regret or disappointment because we lost a good opportunity, right?
So that's a big hint that this use of miss is expressing some kind of sadness over a missed opportunity
Okay, let's move on to the next review question
I've been missing my kids so much lately. I
I feel sick. I think I'm gonna have to miss work tomorrow
Which sentence uses the to feel the absence of someone meaning of miss
The answer is the first sentence I've been missing my kids so much lately
So this expresses that we wish someone were there we noticed that someone is gone and we wish that it were different
We wish that we could meet that person
So when we talk about people when we talk about our family members our partners our friends and so on we often use this
Miss to mean that we want to see that person
So this is a really really common and really nice one to know to express how you feel with the people that are most
Important to you. Okay, great. Let's move on to the last review question. I
I got up late and missed breakfast
We miss you so much
Which sentence uses the to leave out or omit meaning of miss
The answer is the first example sentence I got up late and missed breakfast
This sentence expresses that something that is regularly part of the schedule in this case
Breakfast was omitted in this case because the person was too busy. They got up late. They didn't have time for breakfast
So they left breakfast out of their schedule
So this use of miss is very common when we're talking about meals that we have to skip because we're too busy or we don't
Have time. So this is a great one to know to talk about those busy days that you have in your life
Great that is the end of the review section and the end of this episode of know your verbs
