Do you know how to make strong suggestions in English?
Welcome to Three Step English Practice by EnglishClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to make strong suggestions in English.
Let’s look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
You must take your family out to the country sometime. It’s quite peaceful!
Maybe next summer. By the way, the opening party for Jerry’s new business is in two weeks. You and Michael must come.
Well, I don’t know. We’re a bit busy these days. I’ll check my schedule and get back to you.
In this dialogue, this character
Says "You must take your family out to the country sometime."
By saying "must," followed by a verb phrase using the base form of the verb "take," they are making a strong suggestion to the other character. The speaker is not involved in the action, so it is not an invitation to do things together, but it is a strong recommendation to the listener.
Then, the other character responds with "The opening party is in two weeks. You and Michael must come."
Again, "must" is followed by the base verb "come." Because this is something both the speaker and listener would participate in, this strong suggestion is also an invitation to do something.
"Must" always needs to be followed by the base form of a verb to form these kinds of sentences. Using other forms of the verb will either be grammatically incorrect, or change the meaning of the sentence.
Let’s practice with this grammar more in this lesson.
