Do you know how to make strong suggestions in English? |
Welcome to Three Step English Practice by EnglishClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to make strong suggestions in English. |
Let’s look at the main dialogue. |
Two people are having a conversation. |
You must take your family out to the country sometime. It’s quite peaceful! |
Maybe next summer. By the way, the opening party for Jerry’s new business is in two weeks. You and Michael must come. |
Well, I don’t know. We’re a bit busy these days. I’ll check my schedule and get back to you. |
In this dialogue, this character |
Says "You must take your family out to the country sometime." |
By saying "must," followed by a verb phrase using the base form of the verb "take," they are making a strong suggestion to the other character. The speaker is not involved in the action, so it is not an invitation to do things together, but it is a strong recommendation to the listener. |
Then, the other character responds with "The opening party is in two weeks. You and Michael must come." |
Again, "must" is followed by the base verb "come." Because this is something both the speaker and listener would participate in, this strong suggestion is also an invitation to do something. |
"Must" always needs to be followed by the base form of a verb to form these kinds of sentences. Using other forms of the verb will either be grammatically incorrect, or change the meaning of the sentence. |
Let’s practice with this grammar more in this lesson. |
