English Culture

England has a distinct culture that is of great interest to many people around the world. Many of us become familiar with English culture through British movies, television or music. There are many idiosyncratic characteristics of the country that have developed over centuries, which makes the culture that much more fascinating.

The country’s art, music, architecture, extensive literature, and other cultural practices are quite distinct. In addition, the English language, which is so prevalent around the globe today, was first spoken in England. While the English accent is still unique, the use of the language is not. It is the most commonly used language in the world, and the most commonly learned second language among people from many corners of the globe.
Learning how to speak English is not only beneficial for increasing a person’s prospects in the job market, but is also helpful in learning more about English culture. The ability to read books written in English, watch English movies, and speak with residents of England, when traveling to that country will greatly increase your understanding of the culture.

When you learn English, you will have the opportunity to eventually read works by well known English philosophers such as Thomas Paine, literature by William Shakespeare or Jane Austen, listen to English music while understanding the lyrics, read off of an English menu, and so on. Of course, doing all of these things takes plenty of practice and hard work.

English podcast lessons provide a great way to improve your English comprehension and speaking skills. If you are planning a trip to England, you will find that preparing ahead of time with an English course that offers visual and audio lessons will help you to advance much more quickly.

Whether you are studying English culture through books or by traveling through England, you will find that the culture varies quite a bit depending on the region of the country. In particular, you will find that the southern region of the country—southeast, southwest, the Midlands, and East Anglia—are the most vibrant economic sectors of the country, as well as the seat of England’s government. The north includes Lancashire, Northumberland, Durham, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Chesire and Merseyside. The economy in the north is largely driven by traditional industries.

Of course, tea and the English breakfast of sausage, eggs, bacon, black pudding, and baked beans are iconic in the country. As you delve deeper into the culture, you will find many common and longstanding cultural threads mixed in with newer developments that are influenced by cultures around the world.
