INTRODUCTION
British Restaurant, Part 1: How Many People?
When you think of food from the UK, it’s likely that one meal immediately comes to mind: fish and chips. But there’s more to British food than this famous dish. If you’re in a big city, then you’ll be spoilt for choice with a variety of international dishes, while in the countryside you’ll get the chance to try delicious traditional British food.
SURVIVAL PHRASES
However, before you start eating, you have to get to the table! In this lesson, we’ll take a look at the language
you need when entering a restaurant.
As you walk into a restaurant in the UK, the staff will greet you with either ‘good morning’, ‘good afternoon’, ‘good evening’, or a simple ‘hello’.
Depending on the restaurant, you may be seated by the host or hostess, or be free to choose where you want to sit. If you are seated by the staff, they will most likely ask: “How many people?” Let’s break that down: ‘how many’ means the number, and ‘people’ refers to you and those you are with.
To this you may respond: “Three people.” And, of course, you can change this depending on how many people you are with. If you’re alone, you can just say: “For one.”
Okay, to close out this lesson we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I’ll provide you with the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So good luck!
- How many people?
- Three people
- For one

Outro

Alright! That’s going to do it for this lesson. Bye!
