INTRODUCTION
British Restaurant, Part 3: Smoking or Non-smoking?Restaurant, Part 3: Smoking or Non-smoking?
In the last lesson, we learnt how to make a reservation at a restaurant. Now that you know how to get a table, there’s one very important issue to look at, which is smoking.
SURVIVAL PHRASES
Smoking is banned in all public places in the UK; this includes at restaurants, pubs, bars and nightclubs.
If you want to smoke while at a restaurant in the UK, then you’ll have to go outside to a designated smoking area. So let’s imagine you want to ask the staff where this is. You would say: “Excuse me, where is the smoking area?
Slowly: Excuse me, where is the smoking area?
Smoking is also banned in the outside seating areas at restaurants. The smoking area will be a place away from where people are eating and drinking. So to make sure that you are allowed to smoke, it’s always worth asking: “Excuse me, can I smoke here?” You can ask this question to a nearby person.
Slowly: Excuse me, can I smoke here?
Okay, to close out this lesson we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I’ll provide you with the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So good luck!
- Excuse me, where is the smoking area?
- Excuse me, can I smoke here?
