INTRODUCTION
English Internet Café!
In this lesson, we’ll learn about a place vital to your travels in this modern age: the Internet café! In big cities and towns in the UK you will find many internet cafes.
But in smaller towns and villages, they will be harder to find. So you may have to go back to old fashioned forms of communication, such as writing postcards or using the telephone!
SURVIVAL PHRASES
But let’s imagine you find an Internet café and want to ask how much it costs to gain access to the World Wide Web. You could say-
“Excuse me, how much is it per hour?”
Let’s break it down.
First up, we have our usual ‘excuse me’ to get the person’s attention. Then we have to ask the price by saying ‘how much is it’, before adding ‘per hour’, which is the amount of time you want to use the Internet for.
The person may answer: “It’s £2 an hour.” Taking a closer look at that answer, we first have ‘it’s’, which is a contraction of ‘it’ and ‘is’, followed by the price, ‘£2’, and finally ‘an hour’, which is how much time you’ll get for your money.
If you have a laptop or smartphone, then it may be possible to find a Wi-Fi Internet connection around many of the towns and cities in the UK. Often the Wi-Fi signal is free, but sometimes you might have to buy a cup of coffee at a café to gain the password for the connection.
Okay, to close out this lesson we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I’ll provide you with the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So good luck!
- Excuse me, how much is it per hour?
- It’s two pounds an hour
