INTRODUCTION
How Do You Say This in English?
There may be times when you just can’t remember the word of something in English. So in this lesson we’ll learn a phrase that will help at times like this: “How do you say [something] in English?”
SURVIVAL PHRASES
Since we can’t really pick an English word for this example, we’ll use ‘manzana’, the Spanish word for “apple”.
So you would say: “How do you say ‘manzana’ in English?”
This, of course, assumes that the person you’re asking can understand Spanish. We start this sentence with ‘how’, followed by ‘do you say’ to ask the question. Next up is the word you want to know, in this case ‘manzana’, and then ‘in English’. So altogether we have: “How do you say ‘manzana’ in English?”
You can also point at a phrase in a textbook and ask: “How do you say this in English?”
If you see an object and want to know what it’s called in English, then you can say: “What do you call this in English?” Remember the upward intonation to indicate the question.
Okay, to close out this lesson we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I’ll provide you with the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So good luck!
