INTRODUCTION
I Am a Vegetarian in the UK
In this lesson we’ll cover a couple of phrases to make sure that you don’t get any unwelcome surprises during your meal. If you’re vegetarian or allergic to any type of food, then this lesson will ensure that you enjoy your meals in the UK without any problems.
SURVIVAL PHRASES
To start with, if you’re a vegetarian, you can say: “I’m vegetarian.”
Another way to say this is: “I don’t eat meat.” This sentence can also be used with other foods, for example, cheese. In this situation, you can say: “I don’t eat cheese.”
To make sure a meal doesn’t have an ingredient that you can’t eat or don’t like, you can simply ask about it. If you’re a vegetarian, you can ask: “Does this have meat in it?” The question starts with ‘does’, followed by ‘this’, which indicates the food. Next you have to mention the ingredient, in this case ‘have meat’, and finally the words ‘in it’, which means the meal.
“Does this have meat in it?”
You can also use this sentence if you don’t eat a certain type of food for religious reasons. If, for example, you don’t eat pork, you can say: “Does this have pork in it?”
Okay, to close out this lesson we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I’ll provide you with the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So good luck!
- I am vegetarian.
- I don’t eat meat.
- I don’t eat cheese.
- Does this have meat in it?
- Does this have pork in it?
